what is difference between pcos and pcod - #36570

David

I am feeling really overwhelmed with this whole confusing situation about my health. A few months ago, I went to the doctor because of irregular periods and acne, which has been really tough on my confidence. After some tests, they mentioned PCOD, but then I kept hearing about PCOS too and I couldn't help but wonder... what is difference between PCOS and PCOD? I did some reading, but it just made me more confused, honestly. Some of my friends have PCOS and I know they deal with stuff like weight gain and hair growth issues, while I feel like my symptoms are kinda milder? I mean, I’m not sure if that means I should be worried or if it’s nothing to stress about. I tried to talk to my doc about it, but I felt rushed and left with more questions than answers. Is PCOD just like a lighter version of what happens with PCOS? Or are they totally different things causing different health issues? Just yesterday I read somewhere that both are related to hormonal imbalance but what exactly does that mean? If anyone here has experienced either, I'd love to know how you dealt with it or what remedies you found helpful... I just want to understand this whole PCOD and PCOS drama better!

While both PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) relate to ovaries and hormones, they’re not entirely the same. PCOS is actually a specific syndrome, whereas PCOD is a broader term sometimes used to describe a general condition of having cysts in the ovaries. It might help to think PCOD more like an older term or even a subset of PCOS.

PCOS involves a variety of symptoms alongside cysts, more like a spectrum—symptoms include irregular periods and hormonal imbalances that might cause acne, hair growth, and even weight changes. A key thing about PCOS is its tie to insulin resistance, which can affect body weight. PCOD, on the other hand, doesn’t always include such widespread symptoms and relates more to irregular menstruations or ovulatory dysfunction without the broader metabolic complications that often come with PCOS.

In Ayurveda, PCOS is often associated with an imbalance of Kapha dosha, leading to stagnation and obstruction in the body’s tissue channels. Addressing it involves a holistic approach balancing Kapha, which might include dietary adjustments like reducing dairy and sugar, increasing warm, light foods like barley or legumes. Consider also lifestyle changes like regular exercise – even 30 minutes of brisk walking can help balance Kapha.

Herbal suggestions like Shatavari can be supportive due to its adaptogenic properties that help regulate hormones. Also, consider incorporating cinnamon in your diet. It helps boosts metabolism and balances blood sugar levels, easing insulin resistance.

Yoga practices like Surya Namaskar or any dynamic movement can aid hormonal balance. Pranayama exercises, especially Bhastrika or Kapalbhati, also help regulate hormonal activity and reduce stress, a factor known to aggravate PCOS symptoms.

What’s paramount is having regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider, particularly if symptoms like irregular periods persist. Maybe consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner more in-depth would provide a personalized plan. Meanwhile, try maintaining a calm, stress-free environment around oneself—the mind is a powerful ally in the journey to balance.
