What to do for heavy bleeding during periods after 4 months for a 51-year-old woman? - #55672
51 year old woman has been having spaced out periods last year. This time she got her period after 4 months. It started lightly but on her 4th day night, as she was sleeping, the bleeding got very heavy with clots and leakage and she had to wear a diaper following that. On the same day, she resumed her dose of 2 tablets of Sukumara Kwatham after lunch ( she was taking this 2 weeks prior to her period and then stopped it for first 3 days during the period). She also took a long walk for 40 mins that night. Other than that she had a day of air travel on her 2nd day. She has been eating Saatvik kichadi and vegetables and mung dhal. I asked her to take pomegrante juice and figs and beets for iron. Should she stop the Sukumara until bleeding stops entirely. She has access to Pushyanuga churnam immediately and possibly AshokaArishtma in 2 days. What will help her immediately and gently to stop the excessive bleeding and taper the period.

At 51 years, this is commonly seen in the perimenopausal stage, where hormones fluctuate and periods can become delayed followed by sudden heavy bleeding with clots. In Ayurveda, this is often related to aggravated Pitta and Rakta dushti along with Apana Vata imbalance. For now, Stop Sukumara Kwatham temporarily until the bleeding settles, as it can stimulate Apana Vata and may increase flow in some women during active heavy bleeding. Complete rest is important. Avoid long walks, exertion, travel, stress, and late nights for a few days. Continue light, cooling, easy-to-digest food like kichadi, cooked vegetables, moong dal, pomegranate, raisins, and adequate fluids. Avoid spicy, sour, fermented, fried foods, excess tea/coffee, and heat exposure. Ayurvedic support: Pushyanuga Churnam can be helpful for controlling excessive bleeding when taken with rice-washed water or honey Lodhraasav- may help regulate uterine bleeding and support the perimenopausal transition once active heavy bleeding reduces. Immediate gentle measures: Pomegranate juice, soaked black raisins, lotus stem, coriander seed water, and cooling rest can help calm Pitta and support Rakta balance. If weakness increases, include iron-rich foods and monitor hydration.
Thanks. What is the dosage and timing for Pushyanug churnam. Is it gentle to take and for how many days?
3–5 grams (about ½–1 teaspoon) Twice daily after food taken with: Rice-washed water (best for heavy bleeding), or Honey if rice water is not available. For current situation: It may be taken for 3–5 days during active heavy bleeding, then reduced or stopped once the flow normalizes.
