For dry and brittle hair with thinning, essential oils can indeed offer support, but it’s important to consider your prakriti and doshic balance in deciding which one to use. Rosemary oil is especially prized in Siddha-Ayurvedic and Ayurvedic hair care for promoting hair growth and improving circulation to the scalp. It is particularly beneficial if your issues are linked to kapha imbalance, which could be causing stagnation and affecting hair health.
Lavender oil could help if there’s a pitta imbalance manifesting as inflammation or sensitivity on the scalp. It has calming properties that help reduce stress, a known factor contributing to hair thinning and breakage. Tea tree oil is more suited for scalp issues related to impurities or dandruff, which can interfere with hair growth. It has purifying qualities for vitiated kapha and can clear blockages in the hair follicles.
When using essential oils, always dilute them with a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation. For dry hair, a nourishing base like sesame oil or avocado oil can be used. Mix about 2-3 drops of your chosen essential oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil. Massage it gently into the scalp and leave it for at least 30 minutes to an hour before washing it out with a mild shampoo. Perform this practice once or twice weekly.
Beyond topical application, ensure your diet supports hair health. Consume foods rich in proteins, healthy fats, and antioxidants to nourish the sapta dhatus, particularly the rakta (blood) and mamsa (muscle) tissues responsible for strong hair. Keep yourself hydrated, and manage stress through practices like meditation or yoga to maintain equilibrium in your doshas.
If your thinning hair and dryness are significant or worsening, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying health concerns that may need specific treatment beyond topical care.
