how to use sesame oil for hair growth - #36781

Mia

I am super frustrated because I’ve been dealing with hair thinning for like the past year and I’m really wanting to learn how to use sesame oil for hair growth. A friend recommended it to me, and I’ve read some things online but honestly not sure where to start. My scalp tends to be dry, and I’ve tried a few different shampoos and conditioners but they don’t seem to help much. Last week, I decided to give sesame oil a go and massaged some into my scalp before bed. I woke up and noticed my hair felt slightly greasy but kinda soft too? I’ve also read that I should warm the oil a bit before using it—does that really make a difference? Also, should I leave it on for a long time or rinse it out shortly after? Another worry is what if I have an adverse reaction? I have sensitive skin, and I’m not sure if it’ll irritate my scalp. I want to be cautious but also really want to know how to use sesame oil for hair growth as I feel like I’ve tried everything. Any tips or personal experiences you guys have? Like how often should I do this, and are there any extra ingredients that could combine well with sesame oil for better results? Thanks!

When considering sesame oil for hair growth, it’s crucial to understand that its benefits in Ayurveda stem from its nourishing and calming properties, particularly helpful for dry scalp like yours. Warming the oil before application is indeed beneficial because warm oil can penetrate the scalp more effectively, enhancing its moisturising qualities. To warm it, just heat it briefly over a low flame; it should be comfortably warm, not hot, to avoid irritation.

Regarding application, gently massage a small amount of warm sesame oil into your scalp using your fingertips. This massage can stimulate circulation, further aiding hair growth. It’s often advisable to leave the oil in for at least 30 minutes to an hour, although overnight application allows maximum benefit, especially since you’ve noted your hair felt softer after a night’s treatment. However, if greasiness concerns you, start with shorter durations and see what’s comfortable.

Considering your sensitive skin, perform a patch test first. Apply a small amount of sesame oil behind your ear or on your wrist and observe for any irritation within 24 hours. If there’s no reaction, it’s generally safe for your scalp.

In terms of frequency, applying it 2-3 times a week is a reasonable starting point and you can adjust based on how your scalp responds. Adding ingredients like rosemary oil or a few drops of lavender oil can enhance results while also providing a soothing aroma. Both are considered beneficial in Ayurveda for hair health.

If you experience any discomfort, redness or irritation, discontinue use and consult with a healthcare professional. While sesame oil is generally safe, individual reactions can vary, especially with sensitive skin. Always prioritize your comfort and adjust based on how your scalp responds to these treatments.

Sesame oil can be a beneficial addition to your hair care routine, particularly if you’re experiencing dryness and hair thinning. Its nourishing properties are well-regarded in the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, and when used appropriately, it can support hair growth by balancing the vata dosha, often responsible for dry scalp conditions.

To start, gently warm the sesame oil. Warm oil tends to penetrate more deeply into the scalp, enhancing its effectiveness. Be cautious not to overheat it—lukewarm is sufficient. Apply the oil to your scalp using your fingertips and massage it gently in circular motions. This not only helps the oil to absorb but also stimulates blood circulation, encouraging healthier hair growth.

For optimal results, leave the oil in your hair overnight, if possible. You can cover your pillow with a towel to avoid any mess. If sleeping with the oil doesn’t suit your routine, aim to leave it in for at least an hour before shampooing. It’s common for hair to feel slightly greasy after an oil treatment; using a mild, sulfate-free shampoo can help rinse out any residue without stripping natural oils.

Considering your sensitive skin, perform a patch test by applying a small amount of oil to a discreet area of your scalp and monitor for adverse reactions over 24 hours. If any irritation occurs, discontinue use.

As for frequency, start with applying sesame oil once or twice a week, and observe how your hair and scalp respond. If it suits you well, this can be adjusted according to your scalp’s needs.

Combining sesame oil with other ingredients like Brahmi or Amla powder can further enhance its benefits for hair growth. These herbs complement sesame oil’s properties and support the hair’s strength and thickness.

It’s crucial to keep in mind that results may take some time to become noticeable—patience is key. If your condition persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional to explore underlying causes.
