can we eat papaya seeds - #37482
I am really confused about this whole papaya seeds thing. I mean, I recently read online that can we eat papaya seeds, and it got me thinking. A few weeks ago, I started eating papaya regularly because I heard it’s great for digestion. But maybe I should be eating the seeds too? Sometimes I just throw them away without thinking. The other day, I decided to just try a spoonful of seeds with my fruit bowl, and honestly, they tasted kinda weird, but I thought, maybe that's good? I know they say papaya seeds have benefits like helping with parasites and stuff, but, like, is that really true? I haven’t noticed any crazy changes yet, but I’ve also had some mild stomach discomfort. Could that be because of the seeds? I’m also worried about how many I should even eat if I do — like, can we eat papaya seeds every day? Is there a limit or something? And what about the taste—should I be mixing them with anything, or are they fine on their own? Just kinda feeling lost and wish I could get some clarity on this! Thanks for any insight ya’ll can give!

Doctors' responses
Papaya seeds are indeed edible and can be consumed in moderation for their potential health benefits. In Ayurveda, they are recognized for their digestive aid properties, particularly in balancing doshas related to digestion. However, not everyone reacts the same way, and it’s essential to be mindful of your body’s response. You mentioned experiencing mild stomach discomfort; this might be a sign that your digestion is not yet accustomed to the seeds’ properties.
Papaya seeds do have certain medicinal properties, including their antibacterial and antiparasitic effects, but these benefits variy among individuals. If you’re considering adding them to your diet regularly, start with small amounts — say, around half a teaspoon a day — and observe how your body responds. This gradual introduction allows your agni (digestive fire) to adjust without causing any untoward effects.
Regarding the taste, it’s quite pungent and bitter which can be surprising at first. To make them more palatable, consider mixing the seeds with honey or yoghurt. This aids not only in mitigating the strong flavor but also enhances digestability. Make sure to chew them well to maximize their benefits.
As for daily consumption, moderation is key. Excessive intake can lead to digestive disturbances, possibly linked to your present stomach issues. Limit consumption to small amounts and take breaks to see how your body adjusts over time. Remember that Ayurveda stresses balance and individuality; just because something is beneficial doesn’t mean more is better.
If you plan integrating the seeds into your routine, balance it with a diet that aligns with your dosha. Keep an eye on how your body reacts, particularly if the discomfort persists. It’s always wise consult an Ayurvedic professional or healthcare provider if symptoms continue or you’re still uncertain about the right approach for you.
