can we eat beetroot daily - #37837
I am really curious about beetroots and if can we eat beetroot daily? I’ve started a health kick lately, trying to incorporate more veggies into my diet, and I've fallen in love with beets. I mean, they are such a sweet and earthy addition to my salads! Just last week, I made this beetroot salad with feta and walnuts that was sooo good. But then I started thinking — can I eat beetroot daily without any issues? Sometimes I wonder if that might be too much of a good thing, especially since I read that they can affect blood pressure. I’ve also been feeling kind of funny after having them regularly. Like a bit of stomach bloating or something, which is annoying. I know they’re packed with nutrients and very good for you, right? But still, what’s the limit here? Would like to know if there's any downside to having beetroot daily and whether it could interact with anything else, you know, like medications or other foods? I really don’t want to mess up this health journey I’m on. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Doctors' responses
In Ayurveda, beetroot is valued for its sweet and slightly astringent taste with heating energy (Virya), which increase Kapha and pacifies Vata and Pitta doshas moderately. Eating beetroot daily can indeed be beneficial due to its rich nutrient content, including essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, whether beetroot can be included on a daily basis depends on you’re individual constitution (Prakriti), as well as any existing dosha imbalances.
If you are experiencing bloating, it could be related to how your digestion handles the fibrous nature of beets. In such cases, it’s crucial to evaluate your Agni, or digestive fire, as weak Agni can lead to incomplete digestion, resulting in discomfort. Consider consuming beetroot in cooked form rather than raw, as Ayurveda suggests cooked beets are easier on the digestive system due to reduced raw fiber content.
For those concerned about sodium content or blood pressure alterations from high intake, especially in conditions such as hypertension, moderation is key. Beetroots are known for their blood pressure-lowering effect, so if you are taking any medication for lowering blood pressure, monitor your levels to ensure there is no excessive drop.
Beetroot can indeed lead to excess formation of oxalates, it can influence individuals prone to kidney stones. Drinking plenty of water and pairing beets with other cooling foods like cucumbers or reducing frequency to a few times a week could mitigate potential risks.
Concerning its interaction with medications, beet’s high nitrate content may interact with blood pressure drugs, hence it is wise to consult with a healthcare professional if you are on prescribed medication.
In summary, incorporating beetroot into your diet can offer multiple health benefits, but observing how your body responds is vital. Ensuring a balanced diet, mindful preparation, and considering your Prakriti and Agni will contribute positively to your wellness journey.
