does beetroot cause loose motion - #38577

Luke

I am really confused about somethin I'm experiencing. A week ago, I started drinking beetroot juice every mornin because I heard it's super healthy and good for blood pressure. But recently, I’ve noticed that I feel kinda weird afterward. Like, the first couple of days I felt great but then I started to have loose motions... like, so often. I thought maybe it was just my body adjusting or something but it just keeps happening! I’m wondering, does beetroot cause loose motion? This is so frustrating! I even tried cutting back to just a small glass, thinking it would help, but nope. Each time I'm sprinting to the bathroom, and it’s super embarrassing, right?! I’ve also been eating other things like maybe extra fiber and fruits, could that be mixing things up? My friend said beetroot can be a bit strong for some people, but I thought it was supposed to be just healthy stuff? Am I the only one?? Does beetroot cause loose motion for others too? What should I do? Should I stop drinking it? Ugh, help!

Doctors' responses

Beetroot juice, while known for its nutritional benefits, can indeed cause some individuals digestive upsets, including loose motions. It’s rich in nitrate, fiber and certain sugars, which can sometimes be hard on the digestive system, especially if consumed in large quantities or by those with a sensitive stomach or an imbalance in the digestive fire, or agni as we say in Ayurveda.

When introducing beetroot juice, it’s important to start small, about half a glass to see how your body responds. The initial reaction you’re experiencing isn’t unusual and could indicate that your body is either detoxifying or struggling with too much raw beetroot. In Ayurveda, everything depends on one’s dominant dosha—your specific imbalance may be due to an irritation in your digestive dosha, often Pitta or Vata.

To address this, you might want to adjust how you consume beetroot. Instead of raw juice, try cooking beetroot into soups or curries which can be easier on the stomach. This is because cooked beetroot is gentler and the spices used in cooking, like cumin and coriander, can aid digestion. Also try spacing it out to every other day and observe any changes in your symptoms.

Pay attention to your overall diet too. If you’re increasing your fiber intake suddenly, through fruits or other means, it can also lead to an overload, causing loose stools. Our digestive system adapts to gradual changes more efficiently, so moderation is key.

If the problem persists even with these adjustments, it may be best to completely halt the beetroot juice for a while and see if the symptoms settle. Keep hydrated and maintain a balanced diet to ensure that the digestive imbalance doesn’t lead to further complications. Should symptoms continue significantly, consider consulting a healthcare provider for a personal assessment.

Beetroot is known for its health benefits, particularly in aiding blood purification and supporting cardiovascular health, but it can indeed cause loose motions in some individuals. This is typically due to its high nitrate content and its ability to stimulate a strong detoxifying effect, which for some, can accelerate bowel movements. Additionally, beetroot is rich in fiber, which can also contribute to this if your digestive system is particularly sensitive or not accustomed to high-fiber intake.

In your case, consuming beetroot juice every morning might have enhanced your digestive fire, or agni, more than your body can handle right now. If your dosha balance is predominantly pitta or vata, you might be more prone to this kind of reaction as beetroot’s heat and energetic activity might agitate these doshas. Another aspect is your body constitution or prakriti and your current dietary choices – consuming excess fiber from other food sources in your diet might be contributing to this effect too.

To address this, consider moderating your beetroot intake. You could start by drastically reducing the quantity or even halting it for a few days to observe your body’s response. Introduce beetroot juice back gradually, maybe once or twice a week in smaller amounts. It’s also wise to pair beetroot with foods that are more grounding and calming on the stomach, like adding a pinch of roasted cumin powder or having it alongside ginger tea, which can aid in balancing the digestive effects.

If the condition persists despite these adjustments, or if you feel any adverse symptoms like dehydration or intense stomach discomfort, it’s essential to get a professional evaluation. This could help rule out any underlying digestive imbalances that need addressing beyond just the beetroot.
