Melasma, or skin pigmentation, is often linked to prolonged sun exposure, among other factors. In Ayurveda, it is generally seen as an imbalance of the Pitta dosha, which can cause excess heat in the body manifesting as pigmentation on the skin. To address this holistically, consider both internal and external treatments.

Internally, incorporating a Pitta-balancing diet would be beneficial. Focus on consuming cooling foods like cucumber, melons, and leafy greens, which help soothe excess Pitta. Spices should be mild; use cumin, coriander, and fennel over hot spices like cayenne or garlic. Avoiding acidic, oily, and spicy foods like tomato, vinegar, and fried foods is important as they can exacerbate Pitta imbalances. Ensure to drink sufficient water to maintain hydration, and include herbal teas like mint or chamomile to calm the body.

Externally, using natural homemade packs can help. A paste with sandalwood powder and rose water applied to the affected areas can calm the skin and aid in reducing pigmentation. Turmeric mixed with gram flour and milk may also lighten pigmentation over time. Regularly apply this paste and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water; be consistent for visible results.

Daily practices should also include sunscreen application before stepping outside, as further sun exposure can worsen melasma. Opt for an all-natural sunscreen to avoid chemicals that may irritate your skin further.

In terms of lifestyle, manage stress through practices like meditation or yoga, as stress can increase Pitta. Adequate sleep and a routine bedtime can also regulate bodily systems. Pranayama (breathing exercises) like Sheetali is particularly advantageous for calming the Pitta dosha by cooling the body internally.

If possible, consultation with a professional Ayurvedic practitioner can offer deeper insights into your prakriti (constitution) and current dosha imbalances. They might suggest specific herbs like manjistha or neem, known for their blood-purifying and skin health properties, safely tailoring dosages to your unique needs. Regularly check back with them for progress tracking and fine-tuning the regimen.
