which is better for weight loss chia seeds or sabja seeds - #38973
I am really confused about this whole chia seeds and sabja seeds thing! Recently, I started my weight loss journey and came across both. They say both are good, but which is better for weight loss? I tried having chia seeds in my morning smoothie and I felt full for longer, but then I read somewhere that sabja seeds (aka basil seeds) can be more beneficial because they're supposed to help with digestion, which might be key for shedding pounds, right? Last week, I was at this health store and bought both types. I made pudding with chia seeds but ended up eating too much because they tasted so good! Then, I tried soaking sabja seeds in water for a drink, and it felt refreshing but also I kind of wasn’t sure if I was doing it right. I read somewhere that chia seeds expand in water, which might help but then sabja seeds are said to have a cooling effect, which seems great for hot weather. I don't know! I’m just wondering if I should stick with just one or mix them together? Honestly, which is better for weight loss in general? Any advice would be super helpful, I really wanna make the most out of this journey! Thanks!

Doctors' responses
When it comes to choosing between chia seeds and sabja seeds for weight loss, it largely depends on what you’re looking for and how your body responds. Both seeds offer unique benefits, but understanding the properties of each in the context of Ayurveda can help guide your decision.
Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fiber, which can contribute to satiety and prevent overeating. Their ability to absorb water and expand can indeed make you feel full for longer, potentially reducing calorie intake. In your case, having them in a morning smoothie is a great idea as it could help in moderating portions throughout the day without a need of frequent snacking.
On the other hand, sabja seeds, also known as basil seeds, have quite different properties. They have a cooling effect on the body, highly valued in Ayurveda for balancing Pitta dosha, especially in hot weather. Sabja seeds may also aid digestion and relieve constipation, which is may indirectly support weight loss by maintaining an efficient digestive system.
If digestion or excess heat is your concern, sabja could be more beneficial. However, if appetite control is what you’re after, chia might be more effective.
Ayurveda emphasizes personalization, so experimenting a bit with both to see what feels best might be worthwhile. They can actually work well together too, combining the benefits of both: chia’s satiety and sabja’s cooling and digestive effects. Try using them in different meals or even together – maybe sabja seeds are soaked as a digestive drink, and chia added to smoothies or yogurt for satiety.
Be cautious with portion sizes though; even healthy foods can contribute to excessive calorie intake if consumed too liberally – like the tasty chia pudding you’ve mentioned. Experiment with smaller servings. Remember that consistency (not excess) is key in weight management. Stay mindful of how each makes you feel and adjust accordingly!
