what to eat during cough and cold - #39036

Anthony

I am really struggling with this pesky cough and cold that just won't go away! I've tried all the usual remedies, like honey and lemon tea, but I still feel pretty blah. A friend told me that I should look into what to eat during cough and cold to help speed up my recovery. Thing is, I’m not sure what the best foods are. Last week, I had this really awful sore throat too, and now my chest feels congested. Ugh! I’m drinking plenty of fluids, but I’m worried I’m not getting enough nutrients. I keep thinking of soups, but what kind is best? Should I stick to chicken soup or is there another broth that’s better for inflammation? I read somewhere that ginger might be helpful and also heard about turmeric milk? Does that really help? Not really into spicy stuff, so should I avoid that type of food? Just wanna know what to eat during cough and cold that can really make a difference, y'know? I’m all ears for any tips or recipes! Anything to feel just a bit better would be great. Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

When dealing with cough and cold, focusing on what you consume can indeed make a significant difference in your recovery. In Ayurveda, the diet during such ailments should aim to balance the Kapha dosha, which can contribute to congestion and a sluggish system in colds.

One of the most beneficial additions to your diet is honey-soaked ginger and a pinch of black pepper – this combination supports digestion and alleviates congestion. Take a small amount regularly throughout the day. Since you mentioned soups, go for light vegetable broths filled with warming, cooked vegetables like carrots and spinach, seasoned with cumin or coriander; these spices gently stimulate digestion and help to clear mucus. Chicken soup can be nourishing but if you’re open to it, a lentil soup with turmeric and herbs can be both soothing and nutritionally dense.

Turmeric milk, often referred to as “golden milk,” can be quite effective as a natural anti-inflammatory. A warm mug of milk with a pinch of turmeric powder and a little black pepper, ideally sweetened with honey if needed, can soothe your throat and support your immune system. To avoid spiciness, use minimal amounts while still deriving benefits. Sipping on warm liquids throughout the day remains crucial, so herbal teas like tulsi or ginger tea can also help clear congestion.

While spicy foods might irritate your throat if too intense, gently warming spices like ginger should be safe. In terms of diet, avoid cold, heavy, greasy foods, and dairy products that can potentially increase mucus production. Instead, go for freshly-cooked easy-to-digest meals, focusing on a Sattvic diet - which includes light, nourishing, and calming foods. Incorporating small portions of fruits like pomegranates and oranges are beneficial for their vitamin C and antioxidants.

Lastly, if the symptoms persist, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner for more personalized guidance would be wise, as specific herbs and treatments can be recommended based on your individual constitution and imbalance. Remember to rest adequately, allowing your body the strength to recover.
