why hair fall from roots - #39716
I am really worried about my hair situation lately. I’ve noticed this crazy amount of hair fall from roots, like I could fill a small bag with the hair I see on my pillow or when I’m in the shower. It's so weird because a month ago, everything seemed fine. Just a few weeks ago I was admiring my thicker hair and suddenly...bam! I’m just done. I’m already stressed with work and then this hit me hard. My diet isn’t great, I could probably eat more fruits and veggies but I didn’t expect it to lead to all this hair fall. It feels like it's coming from the roots more than anything because I can see my scalp so clearly now. It’s just so frustrating, you know? I’ve tried some shampoos that say they promote growth but honestly, nothin seems to work! Why is hair fall from roots happening, and can it be reversed? I read about stress too, but then I think, how do I even know if it’s that or something I’m eating? Are there any specific Ayurvedic remedies or approaches for why hair fall from roots is happening? Any advice is super appreciated!

Doctors' responses
Excessive hair loss, especially from roots, can be quite distressing and may appear suddenly due to several overlapping factors; including diet, stress, and lifestyle changes. In Ayurveda, such conditions often stem from an imbalance in the doshas, particularly Pitta and Vata. When Pitta becomes aggravated, often due to stress or nutritional deficiencies, it can lead to inflammation and disruption of hair follicles, resulting in hair fall from roots.
Considering your description, diet and stress seem to play significant roles. Ensuring a Pitta-pacifying diet could be beneficial; focus on including cooling and nourishing foods like cucumbers, melons, and leafy greens, steering clear of excessively spicy, sour, or oily foods. Try to incorporate proteins from lentils, beans, and dairy, as these are sattvic in nature.
Managing stress is as crucial as correcting diet. Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, can help reduce stress levels significantly. Regular practices like Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate Nostril Breathing) can be particularly calming for an aggravated Pitta dosha.
Oils play a vital role in Ayurveda for hair health. A gentle, massage of the scalp with Brahmi or Bhringraj oil acts soothingly, nourishing the scalp, promoting blood circulation, and strengthening the hair roots. Do this twice a week, leaving the oil on for at least a couple of hours before washing.
Shampoos overloaded with chemicals can sometimes as well exacerbate hair problems. Switching to natural, herbal hair cleansers that contain ingredients like Shikakai and Amla, may support hair strength and overall scalp health.
It’s also critical to ensure a healthy digestive fire (Agni), as weak Agni can lead to toxin buildup (Ama), contributing to hair fall. Drinking warm water throughout the day, alongside Ayurvedic formulations like Trikatu churna (if suits your constitution) can help maintain robust digestion.
If hair fall persists or worsens, consulting with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice would be wise, as they can assess your dosha imbalances and provide more tailored interventions. In some cases, significant, rapid hair loss might warrant a visit to a dermatologist, to rule out underlying medical conditions.
