what is belly binding after birth - #40047

Christian

I am wondering, what is belly binding after birth, and is it really something that works like people say? After I had my baby just a few weeks ago, I’m kinda feeling all over the place with my recovery. There are days I wake up feeling OK, but then I look in the mirror and, yikes—my belly looks totally different than before, ya know? A friend told me about belly binding and how it can help support your stomach, but I’m like, what is belly binding after birth supposed to do exactly? I keep seeing mixed reviews online. Some women say it’s been super helpful for them, like reducing swelling and helping with posture, while others say it didn’t really make a difference. I’m also a bit worried it might be uncomfortable or something? I’ve got enough on my plate without dealing with more pain right now. Do I need to get a special product for belly binding, or can I just use a scarf or something? Any experiences would be helpful! Like, did it really help your recovery? I mean, what is belly binding after birth supposed to feel like? Would love to hear what worked for other new moms. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Belly binding after birth is an age-old tradition seen in many cultures, and in Ayurveda, it’s called “udara veshtanam”. The main goal of this practice is to provide postural support to the lower back and abdomen, helping the body in regaining its pre-pregnancy form. It’s believed to support your body’s natural healing process after the stress of childbirth by gently aligning internal organs and reducing discomfort associated with postpartum changes.

Practically, belly binding can help improve the posture and offer some compression to potentially reduce swelling and bloating. It may also enhance circulation which can support tissue regeneration. Some women indeed find relief in back pain and swelling through consistent use, however, like you mentioned, experiences can be quite mixed. It really depends on individual needs, your body’s response, and how it’s implemented.

In Ayurveda, the binding is typically done using a long, soft cloth which is wrapped tightly, yet comfortably, around the abdomen. While there are various commercially available wraps and binders, you could also start with a long piece of cotton fabric or even a scarf at home. The idea is to bind snugly but not so tight that it causes discomfort or pain. You should be able to breathe and move comfortably while wearing it. Practically though, it’s best to bind for several hours a day, possibly starting with a few hours and then gradually increasing as you get more comfortable.

Consider your lifestyle and how binding will fit around your daily activities. If you experience any pain or difficulty breathing, it’s wise to loosen the wrap. As always, if you’re uncertain, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new postpartum practices to ensure it aligns well with your recovery plan. Remember comfort is key, and every body heals differently — go at your own pace!
