how to apply red sandalwood on face - #40614

Wyatt

I am struggling with this skin issue that’s just been really annoying. Whenever the weather changes or I eat something spicy, my face starts breaking out like crazy! I’ve heard a lot about red sandalwood and its magic for skin, but honestly, I have ZERO clue how to apply red sandalwood on face properly. Like do I need to make a paste? How much should I use? I came across a few posts saying it's great for acne and even helps with dark spots, which I’ve got plenty of. The other day, I bought some red sandalwood powder, but every time I think about using it, I find myself googling how to apply red sandalwood on face because I just feel lost. Sometimes I wonder if I’m mixing it wrong or applying too thick of a layer? Do I need to rinse it off after a certain time? And does it really matter how often I do this? I mean, I really want to get my skin in better shape before the holiday season, and I feel like if I can just figure out how to apply red sandalwood on face and actually stick to it, it could really help. Anyone has some tips or a solid routine? Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Red sandalwood, also known as Rakta Chandana in Ayurveda, can indeed be beneficial for issues like acne and dark spots. To properly apply red sandalwood on your face, begin by making a paste. Take about one teaspoon of red sandalwood powder and gradually add enough water to create a smooth, spreadable paste; it should neither be too thick nor too runny. You can also use rose water, which has cooling properties that can be beneficial if spicy foods are triggering your breakouts.

Apply the paste evenly to your face, avoiding the eye area. A thin layer is sufficient - too thick a layer might not necessarily be more effective. Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes. Yes, it’s important to rinse it off afterward with lukewarm water. Pat your face dry gently with a towel. For optimal results, applying this paste 2-3 times a week is generally enough. However, consistency is key, so see gradually seeing how your skin responds and adjust the frequency accordingly.

Red sandalwood is often mentioned in classical Ayurvedic texts and is believed to help pacift Pitta imbalance, which might be contributing to your breakouts especially when you consume spicy food. If you’re dealing with dark spots, its regular use can help lighten them over time. However, if your breakouts or any symptoms worsen, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional or an Ayurvedic specialist.

For your diet, try to include more cooling foods that balance Pitta, such as cucumbers and melons, and avoid excessively spicy, salty or acidic foods. Also make sure to stay hydrated! Moisturizing your skin with a suitable product after removing the paste can also help in maintaining your skin’s natural barrier.

Hope this routine helps you with your skin concerns as you prepare for the holiday season. Do note, redness or irritation after the mask is not common, but if you note these cautionary symptoms, narrow down the culprit by slowly integrating components or seek medical advice.
