does papaya help in periods - #40707

Elizabeth

I am really struggling with my menstrual cycle lately. It’s been super irregular, and I’ve been dealing with a lot of cramps and mood swings that just don’t seem to end. My friend was telling me about how she tried papaya to help her periods, claiming she saw a big difference. I mean, does papaya help in periods really? I was curious because I've read some things online saying that papaya can regulate cycles and even ease cramps due to its enzymes or something. But then, I thought—what if it doesn’t work for me? I am generally skeptical about food as medicine, but I’m so tired of taking pills for pain relief whenever my period comes around. Last month, I had to take ibuprofen like three days in a row, and that felt endless. Would just eating papaya actually make a difference? I guess I’m just kind of wondering if anyone else has had experiences similar to this, like does papaya help in periods with regularity as well? Maybe if it helps with cramps too? Would love to hear what other people think or if there are other natural remedies that work! I’m willing to try anything at this point!

Papaya might just be your friend when it comes to menstrual concerns. In Ayurveda, papaya is known to have properties that can influence the menstrual cycle positively. The fruit contains an enzyme called papain which may help improve blood flow and maintain hormonal balance, this could potentially lead to more regular cycles. By promoting uterine contractions, papaya can sometimes aid in making the period start if it’s been delayed. This might also be why some find it useful for easing cramps, though, this isn’t a guaranteed outcome for everyone.

However, since your periods are irregular and you’re having cramps and mood swings, it’s crucial to consider your overall prakriti and dosha balance. An imbalance in Vata dosha, for example, can often contribute to menstrual irregularities and associated pains. Therefore, apart from papaya, managing your doshas could be beneficial. Warm and cooked foods, regular lifestyle patterns, and stress management techniques should be basic steps in your routine.

But remember, if intense cramps or irregularity continues, it’s wise to consult an Ayurvedic physician who might examine aspects like your digestion (agni), ama levels (toxins), and constitution. It’s important that a personalized assessment is made. Papaya can be eaten raw as part of your diet with moderation, perhaps a small bowl of ripe papaya before a meal.

In addition, you could try incorporating other Ayurvedic remedies like Ginger tea, which is often effective for cramps and enhancing digestion. Asafoetida (hing) in warm water is another traditional remedy that has been used for easing menstrual cramps.

Ultimately, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice or a combination approach with Ayurveda and conventional medicine might be necessary. Remember that while self-care practices are valuable, they’re not a substitute for professional care when it’s needed.
