Doctors' responses

Given the symptoms your mother-in-law is experiencing, these could be related to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, specifically due to the cold weather condition and stress. Vata dosha, when aggravated, can cause stiffness, body aches, and respiratory issues. First and foremost, it’s important to ensure that any sudden or severe breathing difficulties receive immediate medical attention, given their potential seriousness.

In terms of Ayurveda, focusing on balancing Vata will be key. Begin by keeping warm and ensuring a warm, well-ventilated environment. Warm baths or applying warm oil massages like with sesame oil can help reduce body aches and tightness. Abhyanga, the practice of daily oil massage, will support in reducing pain and promoting relaxation.

Diet should be warm, cooked foods - emphasize soups, stews, and porridges, with spices like ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric to enhance digestion and warmth. Regular consumption of warm water with a pinch of rock salt can help in maintaining warmth and better circulation.

Breathing exercises, specifically Pranayama, can be beneficial. Start with simple exercises like Anulom-Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) or Bhramari (bee breathing), practiced in a quiet space, for 5 to 10 minutes daily. This will not only address breathing but also calm the mind, reducing stress.

Herbs like Tulsi (holy basil), Mulethi (licorice), and Pippali (long pepper) can be beneficial. A decoction made with Tulsi leaves can be prepared by boiling them in water till it reduces by half. Consuming it when lukewarm can help alleviate chest congestion.

Lifestyle transformations with regularity in daily routines – waking up early, regular meal times, and ensuring at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep will also support her Vata balance. It’s essential to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor treatment specifically to her unique constitution and any other illnesses she might have.

Remember, while Ayurvedic practices can support overall wellness, they should complement, not replace, established medical treatments especially in emergency conditions.

For your mother-in-law’s symptoms of chest tightness and difficulty breathing, particularly triggered by cold weather and stress, it sounds like an imbalance involving vata and possibly kapha doshas, with stress contributing a pitta increase. Although her PFT results are normal, the symptoms align with a vata and kapha aggravation leading to constricted airways and muscle tension.

First, focusing on warming and soothing her body can be beneficial. Encourage her to keep warm especially in cold weather, and consider using warm, calming oils like sesame oil for daily abhyanga (self-massage). Apply the oil warmed to a comfortable temperature, and this can help reduce vata dosha and improve circulation.

Introduce a diet that stabilizes vata and kapha. This means warm, cooked, and easily digestible foods. Soups, stews and herbal teas (like ginger and tulsi) can be supportive. Avoid cold, raw foods which can exacerbate the symptoms. Honey mixed with warm water can help in clearing kapha but only use small quantities.

An ayurvedic formulation like Agastya rasayanam can be beneficial for respiratory issues. However, it’s important to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for appropriate dosage.

For stress, simple breathing exercises like pranayama can help; specifically, nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) can be calming. Encourage her to practice it daily, preferably morning time and again in the evening.

If she experiences any acute or severe symptoms, seek immediate medical attention as respiratory distress can escalate quickly. Continue using foracort as per the prescription until her symptoms stabilize.
