can women consume shilajit - #40858

Addison

I am really confused about something and hoping someone here can help. I've been researching this whole idea of can women consume shilajit? My friend mentioned it like a miracle supplement, said it helped her energy levels and focused soooo much better since she started taking it. But then I read some conflicting info online, like how it’s more for men and that it can be harmful for women in some cases. Ugh, it's frustrating! For the past few months, I've been super drained and unmotivated, like nothing really works anymore. I’ve tried changing my diet and exercising but still feel lethargic. If shilajit is safe to try, I really want to know how to use it well, and if there are any specific dosages or possible side effects I should watch out for. My period also got kinda irregular lately, and I’m worried mixing it with that might make it worse? Also, should I be concerned about hormonal imbalances? Just really hoping for some clarity. Can women consume shilajit safely and do you think it might actually help me out? Thanks in advance, any input would be super appreciated!!

Doctors' responses

Yes, women can consume shilajit safely, but it’s vital to ensure that it is appropriate for your specific health condition and to use it in the correct manner. Shilajit is known in Ayurveda for its rejuvenating properties and is believed to enhance strength and energy. But just like any supplement, it must be taken with caution and understanding of its effects on individual health.

If you’re experiancing lethargy and irregular menstrual cycles, it’s crucial to first understand the root causes. Shilajit, being an adaptogen, may support those dealing with chronic fatigue and help balance energy levels. However, if there’s a suspected hormonal imbalance, it’s essential to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide a personalized assessment.

When considering shilajit for energy, the quality of the product is of utmost importance. Look for purified, high-quality shilajit, as unpurified forms can contain heavy metals that may be harmful. Dosage should typically begin very low, often starting with 250-500 mg per day, taken with warm milk or water, ideally in the morning or during the day. It is best absorbed on an empty stomach to support better assimilation.

Side effects may include, in some cases, dizziness, or digestive discomfort if taken in excess. If you notice any adverse effects, it’s important to stop consumption and re-evaluate with your healthcare provider. Regarding menstrual irregularities, shilajit itself is not directly known to cause any issues, but monitoring your body’s response is necessary.

Integrating shilajit into a healthy routine—alongside adequate rest, a balanced Vata-pacifying diet, and gentle exercises like yoga or walking—can potentially improve your vitality. Always remain observant of how your body responds, and adjust usage accordingly. Consulting with a healthcare professional familiar with Ayurveda remains a sound approach to navigating any health interventions involving shilajit, particularly when dealing with menstrual and energy-related concerns.

Women can indeed consume shilajit, and it may offer health benefits, particularly when dealing with fatigue and lack of motivation, like you’ve mentioned. In Siddha-Ayurveda, shilajit is revered for its rejuvenative and adaptogenic properties. It helps enhance energy levels, support metabolic functions, and can fortify the body’s ability to cope with stress.

However, it’s crucial to consider individual conditions and dosha imbalances before using it. Given your symptoms—feeling drained and experiencing menstrual irregularities—there’s a possibility that there’s an imbalance in the Vata and Pitta doshas. Shilajit can help in situations of Vata mode imbalance by providing grounding energy. But if consumed in excess, it might aggravate Pitta, potentially affecting menstrual cycles and causing hot flashes or irritability.

The safe consumption of shilajit generally involves starting with a low dose—about 300 to 500 mg of purified shilajit daily, taken with warm water or milk early in the morning. Monitor your body’s response closely. If you notice any adverse effects like digestive upset or changes in your menstrual cycle, it would be wise to pause and consult with a healthcare provider well-versed in Siddha-Ayurveda.

Pay attention to quality; always source shilajit from a reputable supplier to avoid contamination risks. Also, explore simple lifestyle and dietary adjustments to support hormonal balance, like ensuring regularity in meals and sleep, while avoiding excessive stimulants which can disrupt energy and hormonal rhythms.

Remember, while shilajit is useful, the emphasis should also be on holistic balance and addressing the root causes of fatigue and hormonal shifts through comprehensive lifestyle changes tailored to your prakriti or body constitution. In serious or persisting cases, seeking personalized advice from a professional is always the best action.
