does eating curd increase weight - #40861

Owen

I am really confused about this whole thing with curd! For years, I always thought it was super healthy, you know? I even remember my grandma always saying how good it was for digestion and all that. But lately, I’ve been reading stuff online that says eating curd can actually lead to weight gain and like, does eating curd increase weight? I mean, I’ve been trying to lose a few pounds, and I really love my daily bowl of curd with fruits. Last week, I went for my regular check-up, and the doctor kinda hinted I gained a little, which totally freaked me out because I exercise regularly! I started thinking about my diet, and now I’m worried that maybe my beloved curd is the culprit. I really don’t want to give it up, but I also don’t want to pack on more pounds! Could it be that the fats in curd are adding to my weight? Or is it more about portion sizes? I feel like I need some solid advice here. Anyone else gone through this or got some insights? Please help! Does eating curd increase weight or am I just overthinking everything!??

Curd is indeed a nutritious food and in Ayurveda, it is considered beneficial for various aspects of well-being, including digestion. However, when it comes to weight, there are several factors to consider. The issue you’re facing largely depends on how curd is incorporated into your diet and your individual body constitution, or prakriti in Ayurvedic terms.

Curd is Kapha-increasing, which means it can potentially lead to weight gain if consumed inappropriately or in excess. It is heavy to digest and tends to increase mucus production, which can affect individuals with a Kapha dominant constitution in particular. But, for someone trying to lose weight, moderation, and timing become crucial.

Portion size is definitely a factor; consuming large amounts could disrupt agni (digestive fire), slowing metabolism. Consider consuming curd in a smaller quantity, like a small bowl, and notice how your body reacts. Timing, according to Ayurveda, is also essential. It’s best to have curd during lunch when digestive enzymes are most active. Avoid eating curd at night, as it can cause indigestion and weight gain.

Combining curd with other ingredients can also have varying effects. Mixing curd with fruits, for example, can disrupt the digestion process due to differing digestion rates. Instead, try having curd with warm spices like cumin or black pepper, which aid digestion and counterbalance the heaviness. Homemade curd is better than store-bought, as it lacks preservatives and is fresher.

Everything hinges on understanding your unique constitution. If uncertain, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner could offer personalized guidance. Remember, how food impacts weight is interconnected with your entire lifestyle, including diet, physical activity, and even stress levels. Keeping this holistic perspective in mind, try adjusting portions and timings first, without entirely abandoning curd unless advised. This approach can lead to healthier weight management.

Curd itself doesn’t necessarily cause weight gain, but the context in which it’s consumed can influence its effects on your body. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, curd can be seen as both nourishing and balancing when used appropriately, considering your individual dosha constitution and nutritional needs.

Curd is known for its ability to support digestion and help maintain gut health due to the probiotics it contains, aligning with your grandmother’s traditional wisdom. However, its effect varies based on how and when you consume it. For instance, consuming curd in the evening might be heavier for digestion due to inherently Kapha increasing qualities. This can lead to accumulation, especially if your Kapha dosha is already predominant or your digestive fire, or agni, is weak.

Considering you’re trying to lose weight, portion size and the accompaniments—like fruits—matter significantly. Excessive consumption, paired with high-caloric additions, might contribute to weight gain. In Ayurveda, balance is key. Therefore, it is advised to consume curd for lunch as it is easier to digest during the day when the digestive power is stronger.

Opt for low-fat or homemade curd and limit your portions. Additionally, avoid adding sugar or heavy, sweet fruits that might increase calorie intake. Spice it with a bit of cumin or coriander to enhance digestion. Always ensure it works well with your digestive process, observing any signs of discomfort or imbalance.

If weight management and digestive efficiency remain concerns, considering consulting with a practitioner who can assess your individual needs and adjust dietary practices safely and effectively.
