why we should not eat curd after eating fish - #40920

John

I am really confused about something I’ve heard a lot in my family, and it’s about food combinations. Like, I’ve been told repeatedly that we should not eat curd after eating fish, right? It sounds kinda strange, but my grandma always insists on this rule. Last week, I had a delicious fish curry for dinner, and I was thinking about making a raita with curd to go with it because it’s my fav, but then I remembered her warning. I mean, is it really true that we shouldn't eat curd after fish? I even looked up some stuff online, and I read that it can supposedly cause skin problems or digestion issues. Like, what?! That freaked me out. I don't have any skin issues, but now I’m worried if I accidentally ate curd right after the fish. Plus, I know people who mix them without a problem. Can someone explain why we should not eat curd after eating fish? Is this a tradition or there’s some science behind it? I just wanna understand better because honestly, it feels kinda silly to me but then, I don't wanna ignore an important point! Help!

In Ayurveda, the combination of curd and fish is considered to be incompatible. This concept is based on the idea of “Viruddha Ahara,” which are incompatible foods that can disturb the balance of doshas, particularly the digestive fire, or agni. When these two are consumed together, they are believed to potentially create disturbances in digestion and may lead to the formation of toxins known as “Ama.” This can contribute to skin problems or other imbalances if your digestive system isn’t strong enough to process it well.

Fish and curd are said to have opposing potencies or “virya.” Fish has a heating quality while curd is known to be cooling, which can cause the Agni to become disturbed, leading to improper digestion. Furthermore, fish is known to be rich in proteins while curd has high levels of acids. This can lead to gastric issues or possibly aggravate doshas for those who have a dominant Kapha or Pitta prakriti.

However, it’s important to note that this is a traditional perspective. Many people consume them together without issues, depending on their personal constitution and digestive strength. If you haven’t experienced any discomfort or skin reactions in the past, your body might digest it fine, but it’s generally recommended to avoid habitually consuming such combinations.

If you want to enjoy fish and curd separately, aim for a gap of few hours between consuming these two foods to prevent any potential issues. Listen to your body’s signals; you are the best judge of what works for you. Ayurveda is all about personal balance, so it’s not a strict rule for everyone—it’s more about understanding your own body. If you do encounter digestive discomfort or skin issues after eating these foods together, it might be worth a consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner to dig deeper into your unique constitution and dietary needs.

The idea of avoiding curd immediately after fish has its roots in Ayurvedic principles, particularly concerning the concept of incompatible food combinations, called viruddha ahara. In Ayurveda, certain combinations of foods are believed to create imbalance in the body’s doshas and could potentially affect digestion and overall health.

Fish is generally considered to be warming in nature, associated with pitta dosha. Curd, on the other hand, has cooling properties and can be heavy to digest. When you consume them together, it might disrupt the digestive fire, or agni, leading to issues in individuals who might be sensitive or have specific imbalances. Disturbances like skin reactions or digestive discomfort could emerge in those prone to such imbalances. This is not universally applicable, however. Many people might eat fish and curd together without immediate adverse effects.

The thing to keep in mind is this principle stems from the aim of maintaining optimal agni and steady balance among the doshas and the body’s systems. If you’re not experiencing any issues, this combination might not pose much risk for you. Yet, for those with sensitive digestive systems, prone to allergies or skin conditions, it’s often advised to keep food combinations simple and mindful.

If you choose to explore these combinations, begin by observing how your body reacts. Try not to overly stress about singular instances or minor infractions. If you notice your digestion becomes sluggish or skin issues arise, it might be worth reconsidering. For those with persistent concerns or symptoms, consulting with a practitioner experienced in Ayurveda could provide tailored advice for your prakriti and current health status. Keep in mind that Ayurveda is nuanced and personalized—it may take some time to discover what foods and combinations suit you best.
