what will happen if we eat fish and curd together - #41047
I am really curious about something and hope you can help me out. A few weeks ago, I had a family gathering and someone brought up that eating fish and curd together isn’t good for you?? They said it could cause skin issues or something, but to be honest, it was mixed reactions from everyone there! I love both fish and curd, especially in summer when I don’t wanna eat heavy stuff. I mean, I had it together just last week—like a nice fish curry with a side of curd rice. I’ve never had any bad experiences with it before, but now I'm worried. I've read stuff online that says eating fish and curd together can lead to health issues, but other websites completely dismiss it. My cousin swears by it and says he's never had any issues. But I've also been feeling a bit weird since then, like some mild bloating and, um, digestive stuff?? Could that be related, or am I just overthinking it?? What will happen if we eat fish and curd together long-term? Should I cut one out or is it just a myth? Like is there any traditional wisdom in Ayurveda that backs this up? I promise not to make anything fancy, just looking for some honest, straightforward advice, you know? Thanks a lot!

Doctors' responses
Combining fish and curd is one of those controversial topics in Ayurveda, and it’s understandable why there are mixed opinions. According to classical Ayurvedic texts, food combinations are quite important, as certain mixtures can disturb the balance of doshas and affect digestion. Fish is considered to increase the “Agni”, or digestive fire, and is generally warming, while curd is cooling. Their contrasting natures risk upsetting the balance of doshas and can lead to digestive disturbances.
In Ayurveda, the concept of “Viruddha Ahara” refers to incompatible food combinations. Fish and curd fall into this category, as combining them can create toxins, known as “ama,” which may manifest as skin issues, allergies, or digestive complaints over time. This doesn’t mean everyone will experience problems immediately, but consistency in consuming incompatible foods might lead to imbalances like aggravated Kapha dosha, resulting in symptoms like bloating or digestion-related issues.
If you’ve been feeling mild discomfort like bloating or digestion issues since consuming these together, it might be worth observing if the symptoms alleviate by avoiding the combination for a while. Listen to your body’s signals.
To alleviate any potential issues while still enjoying your favorite foods, perhaps try them separately, such as fish with vegetables or lentils, and curd after some time with rice or other grains to let your digestion reset. Keep your meals light, favor warm, cooked food over raw, and consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized dietary advice. Always remember, Ayurveda is highly individualized, and what bothers one person might be perfectly okay for another, similar to your cousin’s experience.
