Drinking or consuming curd at night often comes with mixed opinions, but from a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, it could potentially disrupt your digestive processes, especially if consumed in excess. Curd, with its cooling and heavy qualities, can increase kapha dosha when consumed late. This might contribute to feeling uneasiness like you experienced. It has a sour and sweet taste which may be more suitable during the day when digestion, or agni, is stronger.
Considering your dinner timing, it might be wiser to enjoy curd earlier in the day, ideally with breakfast or lunch when your digestive fire can handle it better. If you love curd with your meals, try having it during lunch to balance the pitta that spicy food can activate.
Adding fruits to curd at night isn’t generally recommended either. Curd and fruits can create an imbalanced combination according to Ayurvedic principles, due to their contrasting digestive processes. This can further stress the agni at night.
Instead, if you’re looking for a light and digestively kind evening snack, consider alternatives like warm milk with a pinch of turmeric, which has grounding qualities. Or opt for lighter dishes like spiced buttermilk instead of curd. If you’re still keen on curd, consuming a small amount of homemade, set curd thinned with water and seasoned with cumin seeds earlier in the day might provide the satisfaction you’re used to, without the late night impact.
