can we drink curd at night - #41120

William

I am really confused about whether we can drink curd at night. I've always heard different opinions about it! Like, my grandma says curd is super healthy, but she also mentioned it can be heavy on the stomach if we eat or drink it too late. I work long hours and I usually have my dinner around 9 PM, and somehow, I feel hungry again before bed. Last week, I decided to drink some curd with honey thinking it might help with digestion or something, but then I started feeling uneasy later on. I’m not sure if it was the curd or just something else. I read somewhere recently that curd can actually be good for you if consumed at the right time but it might not be ideal at night. Honestly, I just love it, especially after a spicy meal! Would love to know from you guys if we can drink curd at night or if I should stick to having it in the morning with breakfast instead? Are there specific types of curd that are better? And what about adding fruits to curd at night—is that a good combo or should I avoid that? This whole thing is driving me a bit nuts, honestly!

Doctors' responses

Curd is indeed nourishing and beneficial, but according to Ayurveda, its consumption at night could be not as ideal. It increases Kapha dosha when taken at night, which could lead to sluggishness and may disturb digestion. Your grandmother’s advice is insightful; curd can be heavy on digestion. When consumed late, especially if your digestive fire (Agni) is weak, it may lead to discomfort or imbalance in your digestive process.

Typically, Ayurveda suggests consuming curd during the day when Agni is strongest, to better facilitate digestion. It’s best between 11 AM and 2 PM, aligning with the digestive peak. However, for those who really crave curds at night and don’t experience any discomfort, a tiny amount might be acceptable, but it’s not recommended as a regular practice. When consumed with honey, it might lead to adverse effects as honey is inherently heating while curd is cooling, and Ayurveda generally avoids combining these opposing properties.

If you find yourself peckish at night, maybe consider alternatives that are gentler on digestion — like warm milk with a pinch of ginger or turmeric, perhaps. Regarding fruits with curd, Ayurveda advises caution, as combining them could counteract their qualities, leading to fermentation and gas. Fruit like berries, which are less sweet, if absolutely necessary, pair small quantities with curd and consume during the day if possible.

For your situation, considering your late dinner schedule, stick to consuming your beloved curd during day time. Explore how your body responds over time, prioritizing digestion and overall balance. Keep in mind what’s easeful for you might require a bit of tinkering before finding the best routine.

Drinking or consuming curd at night often comes with mixed opinions, but from a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, it could potentially disrupt your digestive processes, especially if consumed in excess. Curd, with its cooling and heavy qualities, can increase kapha dosha when consumed late. This might contribute to feeling uneasiness like you experienced. It has a sour and sweet taste which may be more suitable during the day when digestion, or agni, is stronger.

Considering your dinner timing, it might be wiser to enjoy curd earlier in the day, ideally with breakfast or lunch when your digestive fire can handle it better. If you love curd with your meals, try having it during lunch to balance the pitta that spicy food can activate.

Adding fruits to curd at night isn’t generally recommended either. Curd and fruits can create an imbalanced combination according to Ayurvedic principles, due to their contrasting digestive processes. This can further stress the agni at night.

Instead, if you’re looking for a light and digestively kind evening snack, consider alternatives like warm milk with a pinch of turmeric, which has grounding qualities. Or opt for lighter dishes like spiced buttermilk instead of curd. If you’re still keen on curd, consuming a small amount of homemade, set curd thinned with water and seasoned with cumin seeds earlier in the day might provide the satisfaction you’re used to, without the late night impact.
