how to eat curd for weight loss - #41332

Ava

I am really struggling with my weight lately and just can’t seem to drop those pounds, even though I've tried sooo many diets. A friend mentioned that eating curd could help with weight loss, but I’m a bit confused on how to eat curd for weight loss. Like, is there a specific way I should take it? Should I have it in the morning or evening? I’ve been mixing it with fruits, but I don’t know if that’s actually right or if i should keep it plain. Also, I’m not sure what kind of curd is best, like do I need to go for low-fat or regular? And I heard something about eating it after meals helps in digestion and all, but do u think that actually aids in weight loss? I really want to see some results soon! 😅 I sometimes feel like I’m just going in circles trying to figure it all out, and I want to make the most of this curd thing if it really works! Any tips on how to eat curd for weight loss would be super helpful. Should I drink it or mix it with something? Would love to hear ur thoughts!

To harness the benefits of curd for weight loss, it is essential to consider your dosha balance and digestive strength, or agni, as these play a significant role in determining how well you process and benefit from foods. In Ayurveda, curd or yogurt, is generally regarded as heavy (guru) and can aggravate the Kapha dosha. However, when consumed thoughtfully, it can offer benefits even for those seeking to lose weight.

First off, the timing of consuming curd can make a difference. It’s best to have curd during lunchtime when digestion is strongest, as eating it at night can lead to indigestion or heaviness. This is in line with enhancing your agni without creating ama (toxins). As for the type of curd, regular full-fat curd is preferred over low-fat varieties, as it’s believed more natural and aligns with Ayurvedic dietary practices. Low-fat curd often contains additives and lacks the nourishment found in traditional curd.

Eating plain curd is most beneficial, but if you wish to add something, consider spices such as cumin or a pinch of black pepper—they stimulate digestive fire, enhancing metabolism, aiding weight loss effort. Although mixing curd with fruits is common, in Ayurveda, this combination is considered viruddha ahara (incompatible) as it can lead to digestive issues, unless the fruits are sweet in nature like ripe bananas.

Instead of having it as dessert or post-meal, incorporating curd as part of a meal is ideal. You might try making a raita by mixing curd with finely chopped cucumber or carrots, or perhaps even mint. These additions not only add flavor but are light and refreshing, aligning with the goal of weight management.

Fermented foods like curd can also naturally manage body weight by influencing gut flora positively, though it’s crucial to consume it fresh, as sour or stale curd can aggravate doshas. If you like, you can include buttermilk which is lighter, and easier to digest due to its liquid form, great as a mid-morning or afternoon drink.

Lastly, if you experience any digestive discomfort, curd should be reduced or avoided for some time. Every person’s Ayurvedic constitution is unique, and observing how your body responds to curd will provide the most insight into how well it contributes to your weight loss journey. Remember, this is part of a lifestyle change, including diet and exercise, not a one-size-fits-all solution, and it should be in line with your overall health goals. Consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor a plan more specifically to your constitution.

To potentially aid weight loss with curd, focusing on how you incorporate it into your daily routine can make a difference. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, curd is considered heavy to digest because it increases kapha, which might affect weight loss. Here are some tips on consuming curd with this in mind:

First, it’s ideal to eat small quantities and preferably in the daytime, when your digestive fire (agni) is stronger. Enjoying curd during lunch, for instance, when digestion is at its peak, helps in better assimilation without weighing you down. Avoid consuming curd at night, as it may slow digestion further and increase mucus formation, which isn’t ideal for those seeking to shed pounds.

When you do eat curd, consider having it plain or lightly spiced with cumin and rock salt. This combination can enhance digestion and make it lighter on the system. If you prefer having it with fruits, choose them wisely; sour fruits like lemon or pomegranate can complement curd and balance its kapha-increasing nature. However, ensure the curd is fresh and not too sour, as sourness can aggravate pitta energy when excessive.

Low-fat curd can be an option if you’re concerned about calorie intake, but more importantly, curd made from cow’s milk, as it is easier to digest. For preparation, avoid chilling it excessively – room temperature or slightly cool is preferable to maintain digestive warmth.

Taking buttermilk, a diluted version of curd, is also beneficial. Formulated by churning curd with water and discarding the fat, a spiced buttermilk (with cumin and curry leaves) offers a lighter alternative that aids digestion and supports weight management without the heaviness.

Remember, curd alone won’t be a miracle solution for weight loss. It must be part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Be mindful of other factors like portion control, food timing, regular physical activity, and the body’s natural rhythms. Integrate these curd practices thoughtfully to see if they align with your individual needs.
