can we use multani mitti daily for oily skin - #41382

Ellie

I am dealing with this really frustrating issue with my skin lately. I guess for the past few months, my face has become super oily, and it's driving me nuts! I read somewhere that Multani mitti is good for oily skin, and I got really curious. I have a lot of friends who swear by it, saying it’s a miracle worker, especially for acne-prone skin like mine! I tried it out for the first time last week, and honestly, I felt an instant cooling effect, which was nice. But now I’m wondering, can we use multani mitti daily for oily skin without it being too harsh? I felt like my skin was clean after, but then later it kinda dried out a little which made me think maybe I shouldn’t be doing it every day? I just don't want to end up dehydrating my skin or causing it to produce even more oil. That would be the worst! Plus, I have sensitive skin, so I'm a bit cautious about trying new things. Would love to hear if anyone has experience with this. Can we really use multani mitti daily for oily skin, or should I just stick to using it a couple of times a week? What do you all think, any sage advice?

Doctors' responses

Multani mitti, also known as Fuller’s Earth, is indeed a popular remedy in Ayurveda for managing oily skin. Its absorbent properties can help to remove excess oil and impurities, giving your skin a fresher feel. However, using it daily for oliy skin might not be the best approach, especially when dealing with sensitive skin like yours.

Applying Multani mitti every day may dry out your skin too much, leading to an overproduction of sebum as your skin tries to compensate. This can actually exacerbate your oily skin issue. Furthermore, for someone with sensitive skin, daily use might result in irritation, redness or even exacerbate sensitivity over time.

Incorporating it into your skincare routine, aim for two to three times a week. For sensitive skin, always do a patch test first to ensure there’s no adverse reaction. Also consider mixing Multani mitti with calming ingredients like rose water or a spoonful of yoghurt. This balances its absorbent power while preventing any excessive drying effect.

Be mindful of your skin’s response. If you any signs of irritation or excessive dryness, reduce the frequency further. It’s also important to follow up with a gentle, hydrating moisturizer afterwards. This will help maintain your skin’s natural moisture barrier, negating any harsh or drying effects from the clay.

Beyond topical treatments, focus also on your dietary and lifestyle habits which impacts skin health. Ensure you’re consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and adequate water intake. Avoiding excessively spicy or oily foods may help reduce oil production too. Practicing regular, gentle exercise supports not only your skin health but overall well-being. Avoid stress, and ensure a regular sleep schedule to optimize skin regeneration and health.

If with regular and gentle use of Multani mitti you find your skin issues persist or worsen consider consulting with a dermatologist or Ayurvedic practitioner for a customized skincare regimen. While Multani mitti is beneficial when properly used, it’s pivotal to listen to what your skin tells you and adjust as needed.
