how to treat urine infection during pregnancy - #41691

Natalie

I am 28 weeks pregnant and just got diagnosed with a urine infection, ugh! I’ve been feeling these weird pains and some burning when I pee, and let me tell you, it’s super uncomfortable. Saw my doctor and she said it’s pretty common during pregnancy, but I’m freaking out a bit. I wanna know how to treat urine infection during pregnancy naturally or with ayurvedic remedies because I really don't want to take antibiotics right now. They mentioned some options, but I haven’t found anything that feels right to me, ya know? I heard about cranberry juice working wonders, but is that really legit? And are there any herbal teas that might help with this? I’m super cautious about what goes into my body since I'm pregnant, and I don't want to put my baby at risk. Has anyone dealt with something similar and found good solutions on how to treat urine infection during pregnancy? Honestly, I just want to feel better and avoid any complications but can’t figure this out. Any advice would be really appreciated, like any specific herbs or dietary changes that can help? Thanks a ton!

Doctors' responses

Addressing a urine infection during pregnancy with Ayurveda involves balancing your doshas and promoting urinary tract health while ensuring safety for both mother and baby. Your symptoms suggest an imbalance in Pitta dosha, which pertains to inflammation, heat, and burning sensations.

Firstly, staying well-hydrated is vital. Drinking enough water aids in flushing out bacteria from your system. While cranberry juice is popularly believed to help with urinary tract health, its acidic nature can sometimes aggravate the condition in sensitive individuals, especially during pregnancy. Instead, consider consuming plenty of pure coconut water, which is naturally alkaline and soothing for the urinary tract. It supports Pitta balance and rehydrates.

Herbal teas can be a gentle aid. Consider preparing a simple concoction with coriander seeds. Boil one teaspoon of coriander seeds in about two cups of water until it reduces to one cup. Strain it and drink when it’s lukewarm once a day. Coriander is cooling in nature and helps calm Pitta while gently supporting the urinary system.

Including barley water in your diet can also be helpful as it acts as a diuretic which aids in flushing the urinary tract. To prepare, boil a tablespoon of barley in two cups of water, cool it, and drink throughout the day. This can help reduce burning sensations and support kidney function.

Incorporate cooling foods like cucumber and watermelon, which are beneficial for Pitta balance. Avoid spicy, oily, and hot foods as they can worsen inflammation and discomfort. It’s crucial to consume a well-cooked, nutritious diet focusing on balance and regularity.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, consulting your healthcare provider is essential as untreated urinary infections can lead to complications. Ayurveda offers support for health, but severe cases might still require conventional intervention. Always prioritise safety and consult a healthcare professional especially during pregnancy.
