what can i take for constipation when pregnant - #41943

Zoey

I am really struggling with constipation during my pregnancy and it’s been such a bumpy ride! It started around the beginning of my second trimester. At first, I thought it was just a normal thing, but now it's like a never-ending cycle. I’ve tried increasing my fiber intake, eating prunes, and drinking tons of water, but nothing seems to be working. I mean, there’s only so many prunes a girl can eat, right? 😅 I read somewhere that certain over-the-counter laxatives might not be safe, which makes me super anxious. I really don't want to do anything that could harm my baby or myself. So, I’m confused and honestly a bit frustrated. What can I take for constipation when pregnant that is actually safe? I remember my mother mentioned some herbal remedies that helped her when she was expecting, but I can’t recall exactly what they were. Are there any Ayurvedic options that I can consider? Like, what can I take for constipation when pregnant that won’t upset my stomach or worse? Just to be clear, I’m about 20 weeks along and trying to avoid anything harsh. Any insights or experiences would be hugely appreciated! Thanks a bunch! 🥹

Doctors' responses

When dealing with constipation during pregnancy, especially at 20 weeks, opting for safe and natural solutions is crucial. Ayurveda offers several gentle remedies that can help manage this common issue without introducing risks to you or your baby. One core principle in Ayurveda for addressing constipation is to balance the Vata dosha, which tends to get aggravated in cases like these.

Firstly, consider using Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic blend of three fruits: Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. It’s known to regulate bowel moments gently. You can take half to one teaspoon of Triphala powder in warm water before bed. However, ensure to use a mild version during pregnancy, and it’s best to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before use.

Secondly, ghee, or clarified butter, can be helpful. Try to include a teaspoon of it in your meals or in warm milk, especially before bedtime. Ghee is known to be beneficial in lubricating the intestines and supporting digestion, which could help in alleviating constipation.

Third, increase your intake of cooked vegetables and warm, mushy foods like khichdi—a mix of rice and mung dal. Such foods are easier to digest and tend to soothe the digestive system. Avoid dry, raw or overly spicy foods as these can aggravate Vata and contribute to constipation.

Incorporate gentle exercise like a daily brisk walk for around 20 to 30 minutes. Light yoga focusing on simple stretches can also enhance bowel function without adding stress to your body.

Lastly, stay hydrated, but more importantly, hydrate in between meals rather than with meals to avoid diluting digestive juices. A warm glass of lemon water with honey, first thing in the morning, can stimulate digestion and help regulate your system.

Throughout your pregnancy, any persistent issues should be discussed with your healthcare provider to ensure you’re making safe choices for both you and your baby.
