how to get rid of constipation during pregnancy - #42248
I am really struggling with constipation during my pregnancy! Like, ugh, it’s so uncomfortable. I’m in my third trimester now, and this has been a problem for at least a couple months. I've tried drinking more water and eating more fiber, but it doesn't seem to help much. One time, I went for 5 days without being able to go, and it felt like my stomach was gonna explode! My doctor said it’s normal, but that just makes it harder to deal with when you feel bloated and heavy all the time. I read that constipation during pregnancy can be caused by hormonal changes and obviously, the baby taking up space in there... It’s like a double whammy. I’m also taking prenatal vitamins, and I wonder if they are making things worse?? 😩 I really wanna know how to get rid of constipation during pregnancy because the feeling all swelled up is really getting me down. Has anyone found any natural remedies that actually worked? Or maybe some foods that help? I don’t want to resort to laxatives or anything too harsh either. It’s scary thinking of putting anything like that into my body while I’m pregnant!! Like, help! What should I do here?

Constipation during pregnancy can definitely be uncomfortable, especially when you’re dealing with it for weeks. Hormonal changes and your growing baby can slow down digestion, and as you suspected, prenatal vitamins (especially iron) might be adding to the problem. Here’s some practical and natural advice from an Ayurvedic perspective for finding relief:
First, let’s address diet. Consuming a warm, soupy diet can be helpful. Begin your day with a glass of warm water to kickstart your digestive system. Breakfast could include a bowl of oatmeal cooked with milk and some ghee added in it, as ghee is known in Ayurveda to lubricate the intestines and promote regular bowel movements. You can also try adding soaked prunes or figs in your breakfast, which are gentle, natural laxatives that can help stimulate the system.
Incorporate more cooked, easily digestible vegetables like carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, and gourds. Avoid raw, cold foods and highly processed items as they can increase Vata dosha, which can lead to more constipation.
Drinking warm herbal teas prepared with ginger, fennel, and cumin seeds throughout the day can soothe digestion and ease bloating. Ginger tea before walking outside is particularly effective, as it can enhance circulation and digestion.
Here’s an Ayurvedic routine: apply warm sesame oil on your belly and gently massage in a clockwise direction for 10-15 minutes daily. This can help in moving bowel more freely.
Also, try to keep active; regular gentle exercises like a 10-15 min walk after meals can aid digestion and relieve constipation.
Finally, about prenatal vitamins, iron content might be contributing to your issue. Discuss with your healthcare provider about switching to a formulation with a different iron source or adjusting the dose, if possible.
Remember, these are gentle, natural methods and should be safe, but always consult your healthcare provider to tailor these suggestions specific to your condition.
