can we eat curd and banana together - #42418

Aaliyah

I am really confused about something with my diet. Recently, a friend at yoga class told me that eating curd and banana together is a big no-no. I mean, I've always enjoyed mixing curd in my smoothies with bananas, but now I’m not sure if that’s good or bad?? I decided to look it up online and read some Ayurvedic stuff, but I got different opinions everywhere. Some said it causes digestion issues because of the "heaviness" of curd when paired with the sweetness of bananas, which totally freaked me out I just had a smoothie with both yesterday! Last week, I started feeling bloated after meals and even had a bit of acidity, which made me wonder if it’s from my love for curd and banana. I’ve always thought curd was good for digestion, but maybe I was wrong?? Also saw something about how food combinations matter in Ayurveda, and it got me thinking—should I just avoid having curd and banana together altogether? Anyone else faced this confusion? Like, can we really eat curd and banana together without causing any harm to our tummy? I’d love any thoughts or personal experiences!! I don’t wanna stop enjoying my smoothies, but I also don't want to mess up my health. 🤔

Doctors' responses

In Ayurveda, the combination of curd and banana is generally considered incompatible, classifying it under “viruddha ahara” or improper food combinations. This is because each element has different digestive properties that can disrupt the digestive fire, or agni, thus causing digestive issues. Curd is heavy and inherently sour, while banana is sweet and potent. Together, they may produce a conflicting effect in the digestive tract, leading to bloating, acidity, and sometimes indigestion in sensitive individuals.

However, howsoever it may look complicated, the reality of whether it impacts your health is based on individual constitution, or prakriti. If you have been facing symptoms like bloating and acidity, it’s prudent to first observe if these smoothes are the culprits, influencing your personal dosha balance. Perhaps, try eliminating this combination for a week or two to determine whether your symptoms improve, and see how your body reacts.

Regarding curd, yes, it does have probiotic qualities but should be consumed with care, especially during night-time, as its sour nature can aggravate certain imbalances. Ayurveda encourages moderation in everything, so if you’re fond of smoothies, consider alternatives like using buttermilk instead of curd, which is better digested and more suited to harmonious mixing with fruits. You might also add a touch of spices like cardamom or cinnamon which help balance the heavy properties of banana.

Balancing your meals based on the principles of Ayurveda is about understanding what works with your body and its unique needs. If after adjustments, bloating persists, it would be worth consulting with an Ayurveda practitioner directly, to get a customized plan.

Eating curd and banana together can be a bit of a balancing act from an Ayurvedic perspective. According to the principles we follow, each food has its unique energy and effect on the body, which translates into how it interacts with our doshas and agni. Curd, while indeed beneficial for digestion in moderation, is heavy and sour in nature. Banana, on the other hand, is sweet and can also be heavy. When these two are consumed together, they might not always harmonize well for everyone, especially if your digestive fire is already under strain, as could be suggested by bloating and acidity you’re experiencing.

This combination could aggravate Kapha dosha, responsible for qualities like heaviness and sluggish digestion. Kapha individuals or those with Kapha imbalance might find this duo challenging. It could also inflict Ama, or toxin build-up, causing digestive disturbances such as bloating or acidity.

Instead, you might try alternatives like adding warming spices to enhance digestion. Incorporate ginger, cinnamon, or cardamom into your smoothies which could help balance the cold heaviness of curd and banana, aiding better digestion. Or consider having them separately, ensuring each one is well-tolerated by your body without interaction.

Monitor how your body feels with these modifications. Remember that every individual’s prakriti is unique, and observing personal responses is key in Ayurveda. If your digestive issues persist, it might be wise to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner in person, allowing them to assess your complete constitution and provide a tailored approach to support your digestive health.
