Ear pain resulting from nasal congestion often relates to Vata and Kapha dosha imbalances. The congestion can cause pressure changes that lead to ear discomfort. For this, you can consider a few Ayurvedic approaches:
Firstly, steam inhalation can help alleviate nasal congestion and, consequently, the ear pain. Add a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil or a few drops of peppermint oil to hot water and inhale the steam deeply for 5 to 10 minutes, twice daily. This can help clear the blockage in the nasal passages, reducing pressure on the eustachian tubes connected to the ear.
Nasya treatment, applying a few drops of warm sesame oil or Anu taila into each nostril in the morning and evening, can further clear nasal congestion. Lie down with your head tilted back for a few minutes after application. This not only aids in clearing the nasal passages but can help balance Vata and Kapha doshas.
For the redness and flaky skin near the ear, mix equal parts of coconut oil and neem oil and apply gently to the affected area twice a day. The coconut oil will soothe, while neem lends its antibacterial properties.
A warm compress can also be helpful for relieving ear pain. Apply a warm cloth on the ear for 10-15 minutes. You could use a heating pad on a low setting or microwave a damp cloth until warm. Ensure that it’s not too hot before you put on your skin.
Additionally, drinking ginger tea daily, by boiling a few slices of fresh ginger in a cup of water, can enhance your digestive fire (Agni), and help in reducing Kapha accumulation.
Avoid cold foods, dairy, and oily or heavy foods as they can aggravate Kapha and worsen congestion. Stick to warm, easily digestible meals. Ensure proper hydration by drinking warm water throughout the day.
If symptoms persist beyond a few days or worsen it’s important to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment.
