Doctors' responses
Severe hair fall and premature greying can be distressing, more so during pregnancy when hormonal changes are significant. In Ayurveda, these issues are often linked to imbalances in the pitta dosha and insufficient nourishment to the hair follicles. Pregnancy itself can also affect hair health due to hormonal fluctuations and nutritional demands.
First, ensuring an appropriate diet is crucial - especially during pregnancy. Include foods rich in iron, calcium, and proteins like leafy greens, dairy, sesame seeds, almonds and lentils. Adequate protein is essential since hair is primarily made of keratin, a protein. B12, folic acid, and biotin are important for your hair health, natural food sources like eggs, and whole grains should help.
Oil massages can nourish scalp and reduce stress. Warm coconut or sesame oil with a few curry leaves, or amla (Indian gooseberry) oil can be deeply nourishing. Massage gently into scalp twice a week and leave overnight if possible. A loving massage helps improves blood circulation and aids in relaxing the mind.
Avoid extremely hot showers or harsh hair treatments. Use herbal shampoos and conditioners, with amla and shikakai, which cleanse without stripping out moisture. Stress management is key as pregnancy can intensify emotional upheaval. Practice gentle techniques like guided meditations, or yoga (prenatal yoga if available).
Also, assess your sleep patterns. Lack of sleep impacts one’s hormonal balance and overall wellbeing. Ayurveda suggests sleeping on time and waking early, if possibly before sunrise, in alignment with natural rhythms.
Consult your obstetrician before taking supplements or making drastic changes due to pregnancy– these suggestions should augment your existing routine keeping safety first. If hair loss continues intensely, visiting an ayurvedic practitioner would help to tailor personalized care addressing any specific dosha imbalances.
