Postpartum, the body undergoes numerous changes and takes time to return to its pre-pregnancy state. In Ayurveda, this transition is highly influenced by the Vata dosha, known for its qualities of movement and dryness. After childbirth, Vata can become imbalanced, often leading to changes in menstrual flow and pattern. A minimal period flow, or scanty menstruation, could indicate an imbalance of the Vata dosha, coupled with a disturbed Rasa dhatu (the primary tissue that flows as menstrual blood).

Here’s what might be happening: As Vata dries and disseminates, it can reduce the quantity and quality of menstrual flow. This may result in lighter periods. The absence of pre-menstrual symptoms like cramps can be due to changes in your hormonal patterns and uterine structure post-pregnancy.

To address this, focus first on pacifying Vata. Incorporate warm, moist and nourishing food into your diet to support your body’s rejuvenation. Kitchari (a simple dish of rice and mung beans) with ghee and digestive spices like ginger and cumin can be beneficial. Warm sesame oil massages may help stabilize and calm Vata.

Consider making a tea from fennel seeds; boiling a teaspoon of fennel seeds in two cups of water till reduced to one cup, and consume it once a day. Fennel is known to regulate menstruation and soothe any digestive disturbances.

Moreover, support your Agni, or digestive fire. Eating at regular intervals, avoiding cold foods and drinks, and favouring cooked over raw can fortify your Agni.

If scanty flow and irregularity persist, and are concerning, consulting with a healthcare professional is advised. They can rule out other potential causes such as hormonal imbalances or thyroid issues, which Ayurveda doesn’t treat directly.

Remember, allowing time for gradual recovery at your own pace is essential. Your body went through a transformation and Ayurveda emphasizes nurturing nourishment and gentleness as key principles for postpartum care.
