can we eat curd during pregnancy - #44416

Joshua

I am really confused about somethings regarding my diet, especially when it comes to curd. I'm currently in my second trimester, and I've been trying to eat healthier, but got mixed signals about whether can we eat curd during pregnancy. I always thought it was good for us, you know? So, I've been having quite a bit of it, but then I talked to a friend who said it can actually lead to issues like acidity or something during pregnancy. That's kinda worrisome. 😟 Also, I had some heartburn the other day after having curd with my meal, which made me question if I should just avoid it altogether. But then again, I love how it makes my tummy feel settled sometimes. It just a little confusing, especially because I also read that curd is full of probiotics and can be good for digestion, which is super important right now. Ugh! All these conflicting info are driving me nuts! So, I guess my question is: can we eat curd during pregnancy without freaking out about side effects, or should I be steering clear? Any guidance or personal tips from your experiences would really help me out. Thanks a ton!

Curd can indeed be beneficial during pregnancy, but it’s important to consider individual factors and the way you consume it. Ayurvedically, curd is seen as a nourishing and strengthening food, providing probiotics that aid in digestion. However, it has potential to imbalance certain doshas if not consumed correctly.

Curd is heavy and sour, having the qualities of ‘Guru’ (heavy) and ‘Amla’ (sour). It can potentially aggravate Pitta dosha, which may lead to issues like acidity or heartburn, the symptoms you mentioned. Especially during pregnancy, where body can be more sensitive, it’s wise to consume it with caution. The time of consumption and what you pair it with make a big difference.

It’s advisable to avoid eating curd in the evening or at night, as it can disturb digestion. Instead, enjoy it during the daytime, ideally with a pinch of cumin or coriander powder to balance it’s sour nature. Pairing it with something sweet, like a bit of honey or jaggery, can also counteract acidity potential.

Consider your overall constitution too. If you find yourself having more Pittaj tendencies (like heartburn, skin rashes, etc.), moderation is key. Instead of plain curd, you might want to opt for buttermilk or thin lassi, as they’re lighter and often easier on the stomach.

In case you notice persistent discomfort or symptoms, it is indeed wise to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any other causes or conditions. Remember, every individual’s body responds differently, so starting with small amounts to gauge your own reaction is a sensible approach. Keep exploring balanced and varied diet for the optimal well-being especially during this crucial phase.
