can triphala cause miscarriage - #44448

Sebastian

I am really worried and confused right now! A few weeks ago, I started taking triphala because I heard it's supposed to be really good for gut health and detoxing. I had been feeling kinda sluggish and thought it might help. But, I just found out I’m pregnant. I was shocked and excited but also super stressed about my health and what I can safely consume. Now, I keep hearing different things. Some friends say triphala is totally safe, but then I read online that triphala can cause miscarriage in some cases. Like, how can something that’s natural be potentially harmful? I started googling and came across conflicting info — some say it's okay during pregnancy while others caution against it. I'm almost 6 weeks along, and I just wanna do what's best for my baby. I didn’t know I was pregnant when I started the triphala, and now I’m scared I’ve done something wrong. Can triphala cause miscarriage? Should I stop taking it immediately? Any advice from you guys would really help me clear my mind a bit! I really don’t want to take any risks, you know? Thanks!

Doctors' responses

It’s understandable to be worried about what you’re taking during pregnancy, especially with something like Triphala, a combination of three fruits: Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), and Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica). While Triphala is generally considered a safe and beneficial supplement for many, pregnancy is a unique and sensitive time where changes in the body require extra caution with what is consumed.

There is limited scientific evidence directly linking Triphala to miscarriage, but there are some strong reasons to consider. In Ayurveda, the early stages of pregnancy are considered delicate, and ingredients within Triphala, particularly in high doses, could have a mild laxative effect which is generally advised to be avoided. The laxative properties can over stimulate the intestines which might influence the uterus due to their proximity, this might be the origin of concern regarding its safety during pregnancy.

Given your current stage of pregnancy, it might be best to stop taking Triphala following an abundance of caution. Consultation with your healthcare provider is highly advised, as they : can offer guidance based on your entire health profile, including any specific nutritional needs you might have during pregnancy.

In terms of ensuring good gut health and detoxification while pregnant, focus on safe dietary adjustments and lifestyle practices: Ensure you remain hydrated, incorporate soluble fiber-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, and engage in mild physical activities like walking which is generally safe during pregnancy. Drink plenty of water and restwell, as they will help maintain your body’s natural detoxification processes without introducing unnecessary risk from supplements that may not be thoroughly vetted for your stage of pregnancy.

It’s always better prioritize safety over everything else and get specialized advice from your healthcare team to guide you.
