how many days to tie stomach after delivery - #44831

Ryan

I am super confused about this whole postpartum recovery stuff. After I had my baby, I was told I should tie my stomach, but I’m not really sure how many days to tie stomach after delivery! Like, I read that it’s helpful for support but then I'm worried about doing it too soon or too late. I had a pretty tough delivery, and honestly, those first few days were such a blur. Between the sleepless nights with the baby and trying to figure out breastfeeding, I just couldn't keep track of everything! My mom says she started tying her stomach within a week, but my friend said it should be right after giving birth. I don’t even know if I’m supposed to tighten it every day or just for a few hours, you know? I did ask my doctor, but they seemed to downplay it. I feel like I'm missing something. Does tying help with healing or is it just an old wives' tale? And, how many days to tie stomach after delivery should I stick with? If anyone has personal stories or experiences to share about this, that would be super helpful! I just want to make sure I'm doing what’s right for my body and keeping my healing on track.

In Ayurveda, postpartum recovery is such a delicate phase and tying the stomach after delivery, known as ‘udarveshtana’ is a tradition that has been followed for centuries. The idea is to provide support to the abdominal muscles and help the uterus to return to its pre-pregnancy size more effectively. However, it’s essential to proceed with caution and align with what’s best for your body.

Typically, you might start tying the stomach a few days to a week post-delivery, especially after a vaginal birth. It’s crucial, though, if you’ve had a cesarean delivery, to allow your incision site to heal adequately and consult your healthcare provider before beginning any abdominal binding. For many, starting around a week postpartum often balances the need for healing with the benefits of support.

Now, about the duration and tightness, it’s not necessary to tie very tightly. The support should be gentle, allowing you to breathe comfortably and move freely. Typically, abdominal binding might be done for several hours a day, gradually increasing as your body adjusts and feels comfortable. Listen to your body’s signals, if there’s any discomfort, possibly adjust the tightness or duration.

It’s not just an old wives’ tale, as abdominal binding may aid in posture improvement, lower back pain relief, and encouraging the organs to reposition thmselves. Always ensure you are hydrated and that your diet is nourishing, to support overall recovery, not just focusing on external practices.

In Ayurveda, supporting agni, or digestive fire, during postpartum is essential. Eat warm, cooked foods such as kitchari, stews or soups, and include spices like cumin, turmeric, ginger to enhance digestion and blood circulation. Balanced doshas and healthy agni contribute to effective healing.

Overall, pay attention to your body’s feedback. While abdominal binding can certainly assist, it is just one part of a holistic recovery. Prioritize rest and proper nutrition, as these will lay the foundation for healing and well-being. If ever in doubt always check back with your healthcare provider or a certified Ayurvedic practitioner tailored to you.
