Doctors' responses

Swollen turbinates and excessive phlegm can be quite discomforting, interfering with respiratory balance and increasing susceptibility to infection. According to Ayurveda, such symptoms may be associated with an imbalance of the Kapha dosha, which can result in accumulation of mucus and congestion. To address this condition without surgery, consider incorporating some Ayurvedic remedies and lifestyle adjustments.

First, begin with Nasya therapy, an Ayurvedic nasal treatment. Use Anu Taila, an herbal oil, to relieve nasal congestion and cleanse the sinuses. Warm the oil slightly, then apply two to three drops in each nostril in morning and evening. Inhale deeply and allow it to reach the back of your throat.

Diet plays an essential role in managing Kapha imbalance. Favor warm, light, and spicy foods. Avoid cold, heavy, oily and dairy products which exacerbate Kapha. Consider ginger tea with honey to help reduce phlegm, drink it two to three times daily. Also, hot water sipped throughout the day can aid in soothing your throat and reducing mucus buildup.

Steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil can help to clear your nasal passages. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a pot of boiling water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes.

Incorporate prānāyāma and restorative yoga practices like Kapalabhati (skull shining breath) which helps to clear sinuses, and Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) to balance your respiratory functions.

It’s important to maintain a regular sleep schedule, ensuring a good night’s rest to bolster your immune system. Keep your living spaces free from dust and allergens, and use a humidifier if necessary.

If these approaches don’t provide relief, ensure to follow up with an Ayurveda practitioner for a personalized treatment plan. In case of persistent or worsening symptoms, seek medical attention without delay.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
