I’d love something warm and easy to make (preferably not too many spices, as I’m still getting used to the flavors). Any recommendations for a beginner-friendly recipe that aligns with Ayurveda principles and supports digestive health?

For sluggish digestion and low energy, there’s a simple yet effective Ayurvedic recipe called “Kitchari.” It’s kind of a comfort food that’s soothing for digestion and yet mildly energizing. Perfect for beginners!

Here’s a super basic version:

You’ll want to gather these ingredients: 1 cup of white basmati rice and 1/2 cup of yellow mung dal (split helps digestion). Rinse these until the water runs clear. Don’t worry I’ll keep the spices light! Have 1 tsp of cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder, a small pinch of hing (asafoetida) on hand. For flavor and digestion, a couple of bay leaves and a small piece of ginger are great too.

Get yourself a pot and heat about a tablespoon of ghee (clarified butter, insanely good for digestion) on medium. Add the cumin seeds and ginger, allow them to sizzle a bit, then toss in the bay leaves, turmeric, and hing.

Add the rice and mung dal to the pot and stir them a couple of times to coat with the spices. Pour in 5 cups of water. Bring to boil then simmer covered for 20–25 mins until everything is kind of mushy.

Add some salt to taste after cooking (too much salt during cooking can be harsh in digestion). A few fresh cilantro leaves at the end can be refreshing and detoxifying, but totally optional.

It’s warm, simple and nourishing to your agni — the digestive fire. Best enjoyed fresh, this one-pot-dish aligns well with balancing Vata and Pitta doshas, which are often linked with digestive issues and low energy. You can eat this for lunch, or dinner, a couple of times a week if fits well in your routine.
