does eating curd increase weight - #24114

I am kinda worried about my weight, and I keep hearing this thing: "does eating curd increase weight?" I love curd — like, I have it with almost every meal! But I've noticed some changes lately and was wondering if my curd habit is part of the issue. My friends say it's super healthy, full of probiotics and stuff, but then there's this thought nagging me — like, can it actually contribute to weight gain? Last week, I had my annual check-up, and even though my doctor said cholesterol levels are fine, I just feel bloated all the time. There were also some comments about my meal choices, with a focus on curd being heavy. Ugh! Does it actually add up to weight gain in the long run? I mean, I sometimes mix it with fruits and honey, thinking it's healthy. Just trying to figure out if I should cut back or maybe replace it with something else. Does eating curd really have that much of an impact? Help!

When it comes to curd and weight gain, there’s a bit to consider. From an Ayurvedic perspective, curd has a mixed reputation based on how and when you consume it. Curd is indeed nourishing, providing an abundance of probiotics which can be beneficial to your Digetive - but it also has a heaviness (Guru) quality and is heating in nature, which might not be suitable for everyone, potentially depending on your body constitution (dosha) and current health imbalances.

If you’re feeling constantly bloated, it might be a sign that your body isn’t digesting the curd properly. This can lead to ama — a form of toxin as per Ayurveda — which can contribute to a feeling of heaviness and sluggish metabolism.

Eating curd with fruits may seem healthy, but Ayurveda cautions against this combination as it may disturb your digestion further. Instead, you could try consuming curd with a pinch of rock salt (saindhava) and roasted cumin powder to aid digestion for a more suitable experience.

As for the aspect of weight gain, curd might not directly lead to weight gain, but if consumed in large quantities, especially at night, its heaviness could contribute to sluggish digestive fire (agni), potentially slowing metabolism. It is generally ideal to have curd during lunch when your digestion fire is stronger, allowing for better assimilation.

To balance out your meals, consider integrating other forms of dairy like buttermilk (takra) or lassi during meals, which are lighter in nature and improve digestion and metabolism. If substituting is needed, you might want to try plant-based alternatives such as almond or coconut yogurt, but ensure they’re non-flavored and low in sugars.

Listen to your body’s signals — if you feel bloated or heavy, remember moderation and timing play a crucial role. Also, incorporating light exercises like yoga, evening walks, or some breathing practices may help improve overall digestive health and balance. This all said, always consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalised advice tailored to your constitution and health condition.
