I am kinda confused about whether can yogurt be eaten at night. A few nights ago, I had a cup of yogurt before bed because I thought it might help me sleep better, you know? I heard somewhere that it’s good or something, but then I read this other thing that said dairy is not the best choice before sleep. I ended up tossing and turning all night, feeling bloated and uncomfortable, which totally ruined my next morning. Ugh! Now I'm wondering if it's just a personal thing or if there really are rules around can yogurt be eaten at night? I mean, I usually have no issues with digestion, but then I felt like a balloon after that yogurt. Plus, it's like, would it be fine to have a small bowl or maybe just a spoonful instead? Or are there certain yogurts I should avoid? I really liked the flavor, but I'm thinking about ditching it for my nighttime snack. Just don’t want to miss out if it could actually help me relax or anything. What do you think?

Eating yogurt at night is traditionally not recommended because it can aggravate Kapha dosha, which may cause excess mucus production and digestive issues.

However, not everyone experiences the same effects, given individual constitution (prakriti). If your digestion (agni) is strong, small amounts of yogurt might be fine, but still, it’s best to consume it in the daytime. Yogurt should ideally be taken during lunch, when your digestive fire is stronger, rather than at night. If you’re desiring to include yogurt in your diet at night for its probiotic benefits or because you enjoy it, one alternative could be consuming buttermilk instead. It’s a bit lighter and helps with digestion.

If you do want to enjoy yogurt, consider mixing it with spices like cumin or a pinch of turmeric, which can aid in balancing its heaviness and promoting digestion. Greek yogurt or homemade yogurt can be better options compared to commercially flavored ones, as they often contain added sugars that can further burden digestion. Limiting the quantity could also help, so occasionally enjoying a spoonful or two might be more tolerable.

This isn’t to say that everyone will have issues with yogurt at night, but since you’ve experienced discomfort, it may be wise to heed your body’s signals and adjust accordingly. Another part of Ayurveda involves listening to your body’s reactions and respecting them, which can be key to maintaining balance. If you find yourself in discomfort often after eating certain foods at night, it might be good to consider other light, warm options that soothe digestion, such as herbal teas like chamomile or ginger. This way, you can still enjoy a restful sleep without the digestive distress.
