I am really curious about something and hoping you all can help me out. Lately, I’ve been trying to lose weight, you know, the whole “new year, new me” thing. I’ve been doing some research and came across this idea that maybe curd can help in weight loss. Does curd help in weight loss? Like, I eat curd almost every day, mostly with my meals, but I’ve heard mixed opinions on whether it actually has any impact. My aunt said it helps, but then my friend said, “No way, too much dairy can be fattening.” I never really know what to believe, right? I’ve also been feeling bloated some days, which makes me wonder if it’s the curd causing it. I did some tests recently, and the doc said my digestion could use a boost, so I'm just trying to figure it all out. Do you think if I eat curd, it would really help or might it slow things down? What’s your take? Like, how much curd should be enough? Any other tips on incorporating it into my diet? Thanks in advance!

Curd, known as dahi in Ayurveda, can indeed be a part of a weight loss journey, but how effective it is can depend on your individual constitution (prakriti), current dosha imbalances, and digestive fire (agni). Curds are considered beneficial for individuals with a strong digestion, but they can be heavy and kapha-increasing which could lead to sluggishness or weight gain if consumed in excess.

The probiotic nature of curd makes it great for gut health, supporting digestion and boosting metabolism, whích could be beneficial in a weight loss plan. However, if you’re feeling bloated, you should address your digestive agni, as poor digestion can hinder weight loss and lead to accumulation of toxins (ama).

For weight management, I would suggest having curd in moderation; maybe about half a cup per day, preferably during lunch when digestive fire is strongest. Rather than having it plain, consider turning it into buttermilk (takra). This makes it lighter and more digestible. Whisking a small amount of curd with water and spices like cumin helps in enhancing digestion and reducing bloating.

Avoid consuming curd at night as it can increase kapha and may lead to further digestive issues. Incorporating spices like ginger or black pepper in your meals can also help bolster digestion and improve weight loss efforts. You should consider seasonal and personal dietary adjustments based on your dosha. For example, if you’re predominantly kapha, focus on lighter, warming foods and maybe reduce excessive dairy intake, including curd.

Moreover, along with dietary considerations, engaging in regular physical activity suitable to your body type (perhaps yoga or brisk walking) and maintaining a consistent daily routine can harmonize bodily functions and support weight loss goals. If bloating continues, you might want to see if avoiding curd for a while brings improvement and opt for alternate probiotic sources like fermented vegetables.
