is frooti good for health - #42578

I am really confused about this drink called Frooti. Like, I used to have it all the time as a kid and thought it was just mango goodness. But recently, I’ve been seeing all these health posts saying that packaged drinks like Frooti aren’t actually great for health, you know? My cousin was talking about how it’s full of sugar, and that got me worried because I have a bit of a sweet tooth. Last month, my doctor said I should pay more attention to what I drink, especially since I sometimes have these weird sugar crashes after having sweet stuff. Just yesterday, I had a Frooti and felt super energized at first – was thinking maybe it was a good thing – but then crashed later and felt kind of groggy. I've checked the pack for ingredients, and there’s a lot of stuff I can't even pronounce! Is Frooti good for health or should I really be cutting it out of my diet? I mean, do you guys think there are any health benefits to it or is it just a sugary drink that tricks me into feeling good for a bit? Help me out here!

Frooti, like many commercial fruit-based beverages, primarily consists of water, high amounts of sugar, and mango pulp concentrate along with preservatives and artificial flavourings. While it offers a refreshing mango taste, it is not the same as consuming fresh mangoes or natural fruit juices.

In Ayurveda, maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for proper digestion and overall health. One key aspect is to manage the quality and quantity of sugars in your diet. Consuming imbalanced or excessive sweet (madhura) foods can lead to disturbances in doshas, particularly Kapha dosha, which could result in symptoms like lethargy, fatigue, or fluctuations in energy levels. These sugar crashes you’re experiencing could be due to rapid changes in blood glucose levels often caused by sugary drinks like Frooti.

The high sugar content in Frooti may not offer significant health benefits beyond instant energy bursts – which are usually followed by a drop if your agni, or digestive fire, is imbalanced. This is likely what you’re experiencing with the sugar crashes and grogginess. From an Ayurvedic perspective, such inconsistencies are not ideal, as they disrupt your natural energy rhythm and can create digestive disturbances over time.

If you’re concerned about the effects you’re feeling after consuming Frooti, it might be beneficial to reduce such sugary drinks and instead opt for fresh fruits or freshly prepared juices. Try replacing Frooti with a homemade mango smoothie using fresh mangoes, a small amount of jaggery, and milk or coconut water. This provides a more holistic nutritional profile and can help maintain steadier energy levels.

To address your sweet tooth healthily, incorporate naturally sweet foods like ripe fruit, cooked dates, or honey in moderation. Keeping hydrated with plain water or herbal teas will also support your digestion and help maintain a natural balance. Additionally, be mindful of your overall diet to ensure it’s supporting your unique constitution and lifestyle needs.

If your sugar crashes persist despite these changes, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional who can further assess any underlying issues.

Frooti, like many packaged fruit drinks, does offer a quick burst of energy, largely due to the sugar content, but that’s where the benefits largely come to a stop from a health perspective. While it carries the appealing taste and aroma of mango, it’s important to look beyond these sensory aspects. It often contains added sugars, preservatives, and other additives that might not support your health, particularly given your concern about sugar crashes.

From an Ayurvedic standpoint, excess sugar can disrupt the balance of doshas in your body, especially if your predominant dosha is Kapha. It can lead to increased Kapha, which manifests as sluggishness, lethargy, and can fuel further sweet cravings. Sugar crashes, like the ones you’ve experienced after drinking Frooti, indicate that it’s not aligning well with your body’s needs, possibly overstimulating your Vata or depleting your Agni responsibilily for digestion and metabolism.

Now, if you’re looking to manage these sugar crashes, it’s advisable to minimize or eliminate such drinks. Instead, you could shift to drinks that offer natural sweetness and beneficial properties without the unwanted aftereffects. For example, opt for freshly made mango smoothies using the whole fruit and perhaps some cardamom or turmeric, which will aid better digestion and provide a more sustained and balanced energy.

Also consider drinking herbal teas or infused waters that can help balance your doshas and enhance your overall energy levels. Experiment with ginger tea or cumin-infused water, consumed lukewarm, to support Agni and keep your energy more stable throughout the day.

Be mindful of your diet as a whole, ensuring it includes a balance of flavors and nutrients, focusing beyond just taste—aim for nourishment that contributes to your vitality and wellbeing. Substitute the artificial with natural options, especially tracking the effect of these dietary shifts on your energy and mood consistently. Finally, if the sugar crashes persist, consult with a healthcare provider to investigate underlying issues.
