can we eat brinjal and curd together - #42845

I am trying to figure out if we can eat brinjal and curd together because I’ve heard so many different things from friends and family. Last week, I made a delicious brinjal curry that my mom used to make, and I love it. After cooking, I thought it would be perfect to have some curd on the side, you know, to cool things down a bit. But then my friend told me that eating brinjal and curd together is a big no-no in Ayurveda and that it could cause all sorts of digestive issues. Now, I'm really confused! I did feel a bit gassy after the meal, maybe because of the combination? But it could also be because I overindulged, who knows! I've also read somewhere that eating these two together can lead to skin issues too, which makes me worried since I've struggled with a few breakouts lately. Is there any truth to this? Can we eat brinjal and curd together or should I avoid it in the future? I just wanna enjoy my food without worrying about what it's gonna do to me later! If someone could shed some light on this, that would be really great.

In Ayurveda, the combination of brinjal (also known as eggplant) and curd might not be the most ideal one. Brinjal is generally considered to have heating properties and can aggravate Pitta and Vata doshas. On the other hand, curd is known to be heavier for digestion and can elevate Kapha and Pitta doshas. Mixing them together could potentially lead to digestive discomfort for some individuals, such as gas or bloating, especially if ones digestive fire, or agni, is not strong enough.

Your experience of feeling gassy may be linked to how this combination affects your digestion. It could also be related to the quantity you consumed, as overeating (regardless of the specific foods) can make digestion challenging. When it comes to skin issues, Ayurveda views the skin as a reflection of internal health, particularly the balance of doshas and the quality of blood and tissues. Foods that disturb your natural balance can sometimes contribute to skin flare-ups or other conditions.

If you’ve got a history of digestive sensitivities or skin problems, it might be beneficial to see how you respond to these foods separately before combining them again. Consider moderation and paying close attention to how your body reacts after having this meal.

To improve digestion and offset any potential negative impacts—if you’re fond of pairing these items—you might try incorporating warming spices into your brinjal curry, like cumin, ginger or black pepper. These have a tendency to enhance digestive fire. Eating small quantities and giving space between consuming brinjal and curd could also lessen any excessive load on the stomach.

If you continue facing issues, it may be worthwhile to consult a healthcare expert in Ayurveda for more tailored advice specific to your constitution and concerns, as these guidelines may vary based on individual health aspects.

In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, the combination of brinjal (eggplant) and curd isn’t commonly recommended due to their inherent qualities and potential impact on your doshas. Brinjal, being a nightshade, is considered slightly heating and can increase pitta and vata dosha, while curd is heavy, sour, and tends to increase kapha and pitta dosha. When consumed together, they might confuse or overwhelm your digestive fire (agni) and possibly contribute to digestive discomfort, like the gassiness you experienced.

Moreover, Ayurveda places importance on viruddha ahara, or incompatible foods, that can disturb the balance in your body. This particular combination might affect your skin health by potentially clogging energy channels (nadis), contributing to skin issues or exacerbating existing conditions. The belief is not universally strict, but its worth considering if you’re noticing personal digestive or skin reactions after meals containing both.

To manage this, you might choose to separate their consumption by a few hours, allowing the digestive system to reset between the two. If you’re fond of curd, try fresh buttermilk instead; it’s lighter on digestion and doesn’t usually cause the same issues. Another alternative could be to consume pickled brinjal or fermented options, as fermentation can alter and better integrate their properties within your diet. If breakouts persist, observe your diet or consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice that considers your unique prakriti, or constitution.
