what happens if i eat curd everyday - #42902

I am really curious about something and hope you can help! Lately, I’ve been trying to eat healthier, and I started incorporating more probiotic foods into my diet, like curd. I’ve heard all these great things about it, but then I thought, what happens if I eat curd everyday? Like, is it even good for me in the long run? Last week, after I had it everyday for a few days straight, I noticed my stomach felt a bit different — kind of more “active,” if you know what I mean. It’s not that I feel bad, just, umm, more gassy? (Sorry if that’s TMI!!) I’m wondering, does eating curd everyday have any impact on digestion? My friend says it's a miracle food and that my skin will glow or something, but I’m starting to doubt. I’ve read a ton online about these health benefits, but honestly, I’m also a bit worried about overdoing it. Are there any negative effects of eating curd every day? Or is it mostly good stuff? I’ve also got other dietary changes going on, like eating more fiber, so maybe that’s playin a role too? Just really trying to figure out this curd thing here. What do you think?

Eating curd everyday can indeed be beneficial, especially if it’s taken appropriately according to Ayurvedic principles. Curd, or dahi as it’s called in Ayurveda, is considered to be a valuable addition to one’s diet. It’s believed to be a source of probiotics, which promotes a healthy gut flora. However, its effects deeply depend on your individual constitution or ‘prakriti’, as well as your current lifestyle and dietary habits.

For most, having curd daily can help in enhancing digestion, improving immunity and even providing a glow to the skin due to its probiotic nature. It’s generally advised to consume curd during the midday when the ‘agni’ or digestive fire is strong. At this time, your body is more efficient at processing it, benefiting from its nourishing effects without overburdening your digestion.

Yet, in Ayurveda, curd is heavier to digest, hot in potency, and can increase ‘kapha’ dosha if not consumed correctly. If not balanced, this can sometimes result in increased bloating or gas, as you’ve noticed. Given your body is possibly adjusting to other dietary changes you mentioned, it might be a combined reaction. Integrating more fiber, for example, can also lead to increased gas production, as the body adjusts to higher roughage levels.

To mitigate the gassiness, try consuming curd with a pinch of rock salt or black pepper to enhance digestibility and soothe the stomach. You might also consider avoiding having curd in the evening, or mixing it with fruits like banana – such combinations are not recommended in Ayurveda as they can hinder digestion.

Consuming curd without substantial self-awareness can occasionally soothe or aggravate ‘Vata’ or ‘Pitta’ imbalances due to its hot and moist nature. If you notice continued discomfort, consider reducing its frequency or seeking an in-person Ayurveda consultation for tailored advice. Balance is key; when integrating into a broader healthy lifestyle, curd can indeed work wonders, assuming you respect your individual dosha makeup and digestive strength.

Eating curd every day can bring several health benefits, especially when consumed in moderation. As a rich source of probiotics, curd aids digestion by promoting a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which could account for the “active” sensation you’ve described. This might manifest as increased gas production, especially if your gut is adjusting to these changes, and if you’re consuming more fiber alongside. However, such symptoms usually settle once your digestive system acclimates.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, curd is generally considered beneficial for individuals with a Vata imbalance, primarily because of its grounding and stabilizing properties. It’s heavy and can help pacify Vata but could potentially aggravate Kapha if not consumed judiciously, especially in cases where Kapha is already predominant. Eating curd daily might not be ideal for Kapha-dominant individuals, as it can lead to excessive mucus production or weight gain.

To reap optimal benefits from curd, consume it during lunch when the digestive fire (agni) is strongest. Avoid it at night, as it can be difficult to digest, potentially leading to sluggishness or even congestion. Preparing curd with spices like cumin or if adding it in small quantities in a meal can help balance its heavier qualities.

While curd can indeed contribute to healthier skin due to its nourishing properties for rasa and rakta dhatus (tissues), it’s good to balance its consumption with other fruits and vegetables rich in hydration and vitamin content. Monitoring your body’s response is key, and if discomfort persists, consider reducing your intake or observing other contributing dietary factors. If you’re ever uncertain or notice adverse effects, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner could provide guidance tailored to your unique constitution and lifestyle.
