can we eat curd and buttermilk together - #43622

I am really confused about whether can we eat curd and buttermilk together. Last week, I had this craving for both, and I made this yummy spicy curry with some rice, thinking it would go perfect with buttermilk. I usually have curd after meals cause my digestion seems to improve, but then I thought... can we eat curd and buttermilk together? Like, isn't curd just thickened buttermilk, or is there something more to it? After my meal, I felt kinda funny in my stomach, but not sure if it was the food or just me being paranoid about mixing stuff. Sometimes I hear people say that mixing dairy is bad for you or can lead to, like, digestive issues, but I love both curd and buttermilk! Plus, they're so nutritious and cooling! I even read somewhere that in ayurveda, it talks about balancing doshas – so, does eating curd and buttermilk together mess that up? Should I just stick to eating them separately? Just don’t want to make my stomach unhappy or anything. Help!

In Ayurveda, the qualities and post-digestive effects of each food are considered to ensure harmonious digestion. Curd (yogurt) and buttermilk, while related, behave differently within your digestive system due to their unique properties. Curd is heavier and more sour, while buttermilk is lighter, less sour, and more easily digestible – qualities that actually make buttermilk easier on your agni (digestive fire) compared to curd. Consuming both together, while not inherently wrong, can sometimes lead to indigestion, especially if your digestive system is sensitive or if the meal itself is heavy or spicy.

Some of your discomfort may stem from the differing digestive requirements of curd and buttermilk. Ayurveda often advises avoiding the combination of foods with contrasting properties during the same meal. Curd is cooling, yet heavy, whereas buttermilk is balancing for most doshas due to its light and easy-to-digest nature. Its says that buttermilk pacifies Vata and Kapha, while excessive sourness in curd can aggravate Pitta.

If you’ve experienced stomach issues, consider consuming them separately. Opt for buttermilk during the day when your digestive fire is stronger, allowing it to offset any heaviness. If you prefer curd, consume it in moderation and preferably at lunch when digestion is at its peak. Both are nutritious and beneficial, but be mindful of how you combine them with other foods too.

To maintain balanced digestion, you might also explore adding spices such as cumin and ginger to buttermilk. They may help soothe the digestive tract and prevent discomfort. Keeping track of how your body reacts to different food mixtures can be useful in identifying what suits your unique prakriti and helps avoid upset stomachs in the future.

In Ayurveda, curd and buttermilk are indeed considered to be different in nature and effect, even though they originate from the same source, milk. While both have their respective benefits on digestion and dosha balance, eating them together may not be ideal.

Curd is heavier and promotes kapha, which can increase mucous production and feels heavier on digestion. However, it has probiotic qualities that aid in enhancing gut flora. Buttermilk, on the other hand, is lighter with vat-pacifying properties. It’s widely appreciated for aiding digestion, particularly when spices or ginger have been added to it. When consumed together, it might confuse or overburden the digestive system due to their different qualities.

From a dosha perspective, curd particularly in excess, can elevate kapha and pitta if taken in excess, while buttermilk tends to lighten and balance the digestive fire, or agni, which could help counteract curd’s heaviness. It’s usually more balancing to consume these separate.

Given your experience of digestive discomfort after having both, it’s likely that mixing them didn’t suit your current digestive circumstances. I would recommend consuming either curd or buttermilk during a meal depending on your dosha balance and environmental conditions. Try having curd midday when digestion is strong and buttermilk on lighter meals. Consuming curd and buttermilk serenely might prevent disturbing your digestion or upsetting your dosha balance.

Keeping track of how you feel after meals and the constitution impact will guide you towards what works best for your prakriti. If discomfort perseveres, you might consider consulting an Ayurvedic or dietary practitioners for personalized advice that aligns with your unique needs.
