why curd is not eaten at night - #44212

I am really confused about this whole thing with curd and why curd is not eaten at night. I mean, my grandmother always told me to avoid it after sunset, and at first, I thought it was just one of those old tales, you know? But then last week, I had this big family dinner, and my cousin brought out this delicious homemade curd. I couldn’t resist and had a little too much. That night, my stomach felt all weird, like it was churning, and I tossed and turned in bed. I remember my mom saying that curd can cause digestion problems at night but like, is that true? I tried to look up stuff, and I saw people saying curd is heavy and might give you a cold or something. But I love curd! It’s just that I felt maybe I overdid it since I ate like 3 bowls. Do you guys really believe that why curd is not eaten at night? I’m worried it could mess with my digestion or sleep. I mean, it’s fine during the day, but nighttime? What’s the deal? If there’s a solid reason, maybe I should just stick to eating it earlier in the day! Would love some clarity here!

Curd, or yogurt, while a flavorful and nutritious part of many diets, often comes with guidelines around its timing in Ayurveda. In the evening, our digestion naturally slows, this is particularly significant in Ayurvedic understanding. Curd is considered to have sour and heating properties that can counteract your digestion capacity, known as agni, which is reduced during the night. This can lead to problems like indigestion, bloating, or a sensation of heaviness. Furthermore, it’s associated with increased kapha dosha, which manifests as mucus buildup or cold-like symptoms, especially when consumed at night.

You experienced discomfort likely because of the quantity you consumed, in combination with the timing. Eating curd late at night in large amounts could overwhelm the body’s sluggish digestive fire, leading to the churnings and unrest you felt. It’s never encouraged in traditional Ayurvedic practices to eat curd then because it dampens digestion and is said to aggravate ailments related to kapha like cold, congestion, or sinus issues.

Ideally, enjoy curd during midday when digestion is strongest. If you love curd, you can still have a small amount in the evening with some mild spices like cumin or black pepper, which aid digestion, but it shouldn’t be a habit. This helps balance its properties, though remember it’s typically best avoided at night.

For better digestion and nourishment, consider incorporating curd into your breakfast or lunch routine, adding it to salads, or using it as a side. If dinner calls, opt for buttermilk instead; it’s lighter, easier on the stomach, and an excellent nighttime alternative according to Ayurveda. Remember, moderation and timing are essential — they can make all the difference in how well you tolerate the foods you love!

Curd’s role in digestion and health is indeed deeply rooted in Ayurvedic traditions. The guideline to avoid curd at night is largely due to its heating nature, or ‘ushna guna’, and kapha-increasing properties. During the nighttime, the body’s natural processes slow down, and digestion may become less efficient. Consuming heavy or kapha-enhancing foods like curd can create an imbalance, especially in the kapha dosha. This may explain the discomfort you experienced after eating curd at dinner.

Additionally, curd is sour and can aggravate kapha and pitta doshas, potentially leading to cold, cough, or even sinus issues when consumed at night. For someone with a predominance in kapha constitution, these effects might be more pronounced. It’s important to recognize individual differences in prakriti, or body constitution, when considering dietary choices.

If you love curd and wish to have it later in the day, a few adjustments might help mitigate potential issues. You could add a pinch of turmeric or black pepper to counteract the kapha effects. Opt for buttermilk instead of plain curd, as it’s lighter and better for enhancing digestion.

For your digestion, stick to lighter, warm foods in the evening hours. Ginger tea or warm spices like cumin and ajwain might soothe any digestive discomfort if you occasionally indulge in evening curd. But, if recurrent issues like the one experienced continue, it’s prudent to limit curd intake to the daytime.

Remember, your dietary practices should align with your specific constitution and digestive capacity. If more digestive challenges arise, you may want to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized assessment and guidance.
