NG Tube: Can Ayurveda Help with Feeding Tube-Related Issues? - #14826
My father has been on an NG tube for a while now due to difficulty swallowing after a stroke. While the NG tube is helping him get the nutrition he needs, we are dealing with several problems. He keeps feeling bloated, has frequent acid reflux, and sometimes even vomits after feeding. The doctor says these are common issues with an NG tube, but I’m wondering if there’s anything Ayurveda can do to make him more comfortable. Another problem we are facing is irritation in his throat. The NG tube makes him cough a lot, and he keeps trying to clear his throat, which sometimes leads to discomfort and gagging. Is there any Ayurvedic remedy to soothe the throat while still using the NG tube? Also, he has been losing weight even though he is getting food through the NG tube—could this be because of poor absorption? Are there Ayurvedic herbs or external treatments that can help improve digestion and prevent bloating while using an NG tube? Also, are there any Ayurvedic practices that can help with muscle recovery so that he can eventually eat on his own again? If anyone has experience using Ayurveda for someone on an NG tube, what helped the most? How can we support overall digestion and comfort naturally?

Doctors’ responses
I’m sorry to hear about your father’s struggles. In Ayurveda, digestion is a key focus, and issues like bloating, acid reflux, and poor absorption can often be linked to an imbalance in the digestive fire (Agni). For your father, the following Ayurvedic approaches can help improve his digestion and comfort:
1. Digestive support: You can consider using Triphala to gently stimulate digestion and prevent constipation. It is also great for improving absorption and alleviating bloating. Jeerakadi churna (cumin-based powder) can help with digestion and reduce gas buildup.
2. Soothing throat: For throat irritation, Licorice (Yashtimadhu) can be soothing, and you can give him warm water with a pinch of turmeric and honey for its anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe Vera gel can also help soothe the throat and reduce irritation caused by the NG tube.
3. Managing acid reflux: Coconut water can be cooling and soothing for acid reflux. Shatavari and Ashwagandha are excellent herbs for improving overall strength and vitality, and they can help with the absorption of nutrients.
4. Improving muscle recovery: Gentle Abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil, such as sesame oil) can improve circulation, relax muscles, and support muscle recovery. It may be beneficial for your father’s muscle strength as it stimulates the nervous system. You can also try Bala Ashwagandha for rejuvenation and muscle strengthening.
5. Optimizing food absorption: Ensure that your father’s diet, even through the NG tube, includes easily digestible, warm, and moist foods that do not overload his digestive system. Ghee and soup broths can help with nutrient absorption.
Additionally, encouraging him to stay hydrated and giving him small, frequent feedings can support better digestion and absorption. It is important to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can recommend a personalized plan, as Ayurveda places great importance on the individual’s unique constitution and condition.
Dealing with an NG tube can be tough, and Ayurveda may offer some ways to help your dad be more comfortable. Bloating and acid reflux are often linked to weak agni, or digestive fire, in Ayurveda. You might want to consider herbs like ginger or cumin to naturally stimulate digestion. But, since he’s using an NG tube, getting them in directly isn’t an option. Instead, you can prepare a light ginger tea—just boil a few slices of fresh ginger in water for a few minutes and let it cool. Then you can add a small amount to the tube feed. Make sure his doc is okay with this before.
For throat irritation, licorice root (mulethi) is soothing. Its demulcent properties help with throat discomfort. You could try making a licorice tea—simply steep a small piece of licorice root in warm water, let cool, and you can use a diluted version as a mouth rinse (careful not to ingest too much). Just ensure the dietician approves.
Weight loss and poor absorption may indicate that the current nutritional plan isn’t perfectly suiting his needs, something to discuss with his healthcare provider. From an Ayurvedic view, enhancing absorption can be approached by gently massaging the belly area with warm sesame oil using clockwise circular motions. This helps stimulate digestive organs and relax abdominal muscles.
There’s an Ayurvedic technique called abhyanga (oil massage) which could promote muscle recovery. Regular massage with warming oils like sesame oil can improve muscle tone. For neuromuscular recovery, certain yoga postures oriented towards gentle stretching when he’s able to move more can be valuable—though consult a physio first.
Your dad’s constitution and current state are important, so, these are general guidelines. Always collaborate with his healthcare team for safe and integrated approach! Take it one step at time, and be sure to monitor for any unexpected reactions or issues along the way.
