It sounds stressful dealing with all this. You’re right, PAD is about the blood flow, it’s frustrating and painful too. Fortunately, Ayurveda blends well with conventional treatments and can often offer support without invasive procedures.
First things first, we wanna focus on understanding your dad’s unique prakriti (constitution) and the doshas at play. With PAD, there’s often a prime involvement of vata dosha, disrupting the circulation. Calf pain, heavy legs—typical signs.
Herbs come into play as they can be really supportive here. Books talk a lot about Guggulu and Ashwagandha. Guggulu, especially “Arjuna Guggulu”, might help as it works in improving arterial health and circulation. Ashwagandha is another herb, awesome for strengthening both mind and body. You might find these in churna or tablet forms, check with someone who knows the stuff locally.
Diet is another super important factor. Think warming, easy-to-digest foods. Cooked veggies, grains, soups. Emphasis should be on reducing foods that increase ama (toxins) – processed, oily, or cold foods. Toss in some Ayurvedic spices like ginger or turmeric to improve digestion and circulation.
Lifestyle changes can’t be overlooked. Daily dry brushing, following with sesame oil massage increases blood flow and reduces vata. Gentle exercises like walking (at comfort level) or yoga go a long way, 'cause regular movement is crucial.
One more thought: With diabetes and hypertension, the blood sugar and pressure need balancing. It’s very important this balance doesn’t get neglected as it can exacerbate PAD. Close monitoring is essential.
But remember, if there’s signs of severe blockages or rapid worsening, you gotta take that seriously and discuss the options with the doctor. Ayurveda can be a supportive approach, but safety always comes first. We do what we can but listen to the body’s needs and the expertise of health professionals too.
