Epiglottis - #19516

Sophia

For the past few weeks, I've been having this weird feeling like something is stuck in my throat, but I can’t actually cough anything up. It’s not painful exactly, but it’s really uncomfortable, especially when swallowing. Feels like there’s a lump sitting there, and it doesn’t go away even after drinking water. Sometimes, I also get a hoarse voice for no reason, like my throat is tired. I thought it was acidity at first, but taking antacids hasn’t helped much. I googled a bit and found out that it might be related to the epiglottis. Apparently, the epiglottis is this flap in the throat that helps direct food and air the right way, and if it gets swollen or irritated, it can cause swallowing issues. Now I’m wondering if this is what’s happening to me? I haven’t had any fever or major infections recently, but I do get mild colds often, and my throat feels dry a lot. Could chronic dryness or minor infections affect the epiglottis? Another thing is, I’ve always had a habit of eating really fast, barely chewing food properly. Could this be irritating my epiglottis over time? Also, I tend to drink very cold water right after eating something hot, which I’ve heard isn’t great for the throat. I’ve been trying to sip warm herbal teas lately, but it’s not making much of a difference. I know that Ayurveda has remedies for throat-related issues, but does it have specific treatments for the epiglottis? Can herbal medicines or certain dietary changes help reduce irritation or swelling in that area? I’ve heard about licorice (Yashtimadhu) and turmeric for throat problems—would they be useful in this case? And should I avoid certain foods like dairy or spicy stuff? Also, how do I know if this is something serious? I don’t have major breathing issues, but I do feel like air isn’t flowing as smoothly as before. If this is inflammation of the epiglottis, what kind of Ayurvedic therapies could help? I’d rather not take strong meds unless necessary, so looking for a natural way to heal this. Would love some advice on what I should do next and if I need to get it checked further. If I start Ayurvedic remedies, how long would it take to see improvement?

Doctors’ responses

Your symptoms suggest a possible imbalance related to Vata and Kapha doshas, manifesting as dryness and a sensation of a lump in the throat. This could indeed involve mild inflammation around the epiglottis, especially given your dry throat and history of eating quickly. The irritation you experience when swallowing, along with the hoarseness, may stem from both dietary habits and environmental factors, contributing to dryness and irritation. First, it is essential to adjust your eating habits. Begin by eating slowly, chewing your food thoroughly, and allowing for adequate digestion. This practice can significantly reduce irritation in your throat. Avoid drinking cold water immediately after hot foods, as this can disrupt your digestive fire (Agni) and lead to discomfort. In terms of herbal remedies, licorice (Yashtimadhu) can be beneficial due to its soothing and demulcent properties, and turmeric is excellent for its anti-inflammatory effects. You may prepare a warm herbal tea using these ingredients: boil a teaspoon of licorice root and half a teaspoon of turmeric in water for about 10 minutes, strain, and sip it warm twice a day. In conjunction, ensure you stay well-hydrated with warm herbal teas and soup broths. Incorporate moistening foods like ripe bananas, cooked carrots, and ghee into your diet to nurture your throat and promote increasing Kapha qualities for lubrication. Avoid very spicy, salty, or overly dry foods that may further aggravate the issue. If there’s no improvement within a week or if your symptoms worsen, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions. Ayurvedic remedies may take a few days to a couple of weeks to show improvement, but consistency is key. If your breathing feels compromised, or if you have sudden changes in symptoms, do seek medical attention immediately. Remember that gentle self-care and adjustments in your eating habits can significantly enhance your recovery.
