is potato good for fatty liver - #24392

Scarlett

I am really confused right now about my diet after being diagnosed with fatty liver. I was told to eat healthier and avoid fried foods, but I’ve been trying to figure out if potato is good for fatty liver or not. My doctor said some carbs are okay, but like, my cousin claims potatoes are too starchy and it could worsen my condition. What do I do? Last week, I tried making baked potatoes with lots of veggies, thinking they would be a part of a healthy meal, but then I wondered if the carbs in potato is good for fatty liver or if I'm just setting myself back. I feel lost! I also read that some people eat sweet potatoes instead, thinking they're better—like, do they really make a difference? I’m feeling kinda overwhelmed with all this info and opinions. Any insight on whether potato is good for fatty liver would be super helpful! Maybe some good recipes or alternatives would be nice too? Thanks a bunch!

Doctors' responses

Potatoes can indeed be part of a balanced diet when dealing with fatty liver, though there are some things ya nee to keep in mind. Potatoes, being rich in carbohydrates, can sometimes lead to concerns about spiking blood sugar levels, especially if consumed in large quantities. Since you have fatty liver, it’s crucial to monitor and moderate carbohydrate intake to promote better liver function and glucose metabolism.

A recommended approach is having them in moderation and ensuring that their preperation aligns with healthy eating principles. Baked or boiled potatoes, served with fiber-rich veggies, can make a nutritious meal; aim to reduce or eliminate added fats, like butter or cream. Combining with vegetables increases fiber content, helping slow down digestion and regulate blood sugar levels.

Sweet potatoes are often recommended as an alternative to regular potatoes due to their higher fiber and antioxidant conteents. They are also lower on the glycemic index which can be gentler on your blood sugar levels. Plus they offer a rich source of vitamin A, helpful for liver health.

Including herbes and spices like turmeric, ginger, or cumin in your potato dishes can also offer anti-inflammatory properties, supporting liver health. For instance, roasted sweet potatoes with a sprinkle of turmeric or cumin can be both tasty and beneficial.

Be mindful about quantities and approach carbohydrates with balance. Lighter cooking methods such as steaming, baking, or boiling, complemented by healthy fats like olive oil, can make meals supportive of liver health. Pay attention to portion sizes and include a variety of foods to ensure your diet remains both enjoyable and nourishing.

It might be useful to rotate different types of carbs, like quinoa or legumes, into your meals. They not only provide energy but also a broader range of nutrients. Consult with a nutritionist or your healthcare provider for personalized advice that best fits your needs.
