is it ok to eat papaya during periods - #24917

William

I am feeling a bit confused about food choices during my periods, especially when it comes to papaya. Last month when I was on my period, I craved papaya like crazy, but felt like maybe I shouldn’t eat it. I asked my friend, and she told me it helps with digestion and all, but then I read somewhere that it's not always great for menstruation?? Like, some sources said it could lessen flow or cause discomfort, which made me hesitant. But honestly, I feel like I need the sweetness and flavor when I'm dealing with cramps and bloating! I tried having papaya yesterday and, weirdly enough, still had craving today. Can anyone tell me, is it ok to eat papaya during periods? Is it true that it can mess with my flow? What do you all eat when you are on your period? I could really use some advice about what’s healthy or not during this time! Thanks! 😬

Eating papaya during your period is generally considered safe and can indeed offer several benefits. In Ayurveda, papaya is known for it’s warmth and digestive-friendly properties. It’s a fruit that’s often recommended for its ability to aid digestion and improve bowel movements, which can be advantageous when you’re experiencing bloating or digestive discomfort during menstruation.

Papaya has a heating potency and it can stimulate your digestive fire or agni. This can help in reducing bloating - a common symptom during menstruation. However, this same heating quality can sometimes be considered too stimulating for some individuals, especially if someone has a Pitta dominance or if they are currently experiencing any heat-related concerns. It’s less about causing discomfort or lessening flow, but more about the individual’s constitution.

Your body’s cravings might suggest a need for particular nutrients. Papaya is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and is hydrating, providing a combination which can be soothing. Provided that you are not allergic or sensitive to it, indulging in a moderate amount of papaya while on your period should be fine.

If you’re worried about altering your menstrual flow, consider including cooling foods like cucumber or melons to balance the heat if you’re going heavy on papaya. Hydration is crucial, so make sure you’re drinking enough water, ideally warm or at room temperature to aid digestion.

Aside from papaya, you might try other Ayurvedic recommendations like ginger or cumin tea to help with cramps, and foods such as asparagus, spinach, and beets which can replenish any lost iron. Coconut water is cooling and provides electrolytes if you feel dehydrated.

Listen to your body and try small quantities to see how it affects you… Ayurveda teaches us that imbalance in our doshas can vary from person to person, and what works for one might not for another. If you’re in doubt or continue to experience discomfort, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner who can analyze your specific dosha (body type) might be beneficial.
