can we eat curd and spinach together - #25249

Jackson

I am really confused about my diet lately, especially about something that's been on my mind like... can we eat curd and spinach together? I mean, last week, I made this delicious dish with palak (spinach) and added curd thinking it would be a great combo. But then my friend told me that it’s not good to mix them! I’ve been feeling kind of heavy and bloated ever since — maybe it’s just my stomach acting up, or maybe that mix didn’t sit right? I also read somewhere that mixing certain foods can upset digestion... but others say it’s fine? Like, I love using curd in my meals, especially with veggies, but now I’m second guessing. Stuff like this really gets me worried. Wondering, do any of you actually eat curd and spinach together without issues? I just went to the doctor, they said I should watch how I combine foods. Can we eat curd and spinach together, or should I steer clear of this combo in the future? Would love to hear your experiences!

Combining curd and spinach in your diet can definitely cause some confusion. In Ayurveda, the principles of food combinations are related closely to how it affects your doshas (body energies) and agni (digestive fire). Spinach, or palak, is known for being high in oxalates, and curd is naturally sour, heavy, and cold, which both can potentially create some digestive concerns when mixed together. You mentioned feeling bloated and heavy, which might indicate that the combination wasn't well-tolerated by your digestion at this moment. Though curd and spinach don't form a classic incompatible combination, Ayurveda suggests approaching this mix with mindfulness because curd can dampen agni, especially if your digestion is already weakened. If you find you're frequently experiencing digestive issues, it could suggest an imbalance in Vata or Kapha doshas. A good rule of thumb in Ayurveda is to be wary of combining sour foods like curd with certain greens, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Instead, you might want to try pairing spinach with a little heat, like ginger or cumin, to balance its properties and support digestion. Using alternatives like paneer or adding spices like turmeric, which is tri-doshic, can also be beneficial. Moreover, make sure not to eat spinach and curd during the nighttime meal, as your digestive power is naturally lower by then. Seeing how these foods individually affect your body and adjusting accordingly is crucial. If after some tries you still feel discomfort, consider changing your dietary habits, possibly consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner to truly tailor advice aligned to your unique prakriti. Remember, diet is highly personalized in Ayurveda. Monitoring how specific foods, in different combinations, make you feel can help you build your perfect dietary regimen.
