is curd good for throat infection - #25421

Elizabeth

I am really worried about this throat infection I’ve been dealing with for a few days now. It started off as just a scratchy feeling, but now it’s painful to swallow and there's some swelling too. I've been trying to drink warm teaa and honey, but nothing seems to help much. My mom keeps telling me that curd is good for throat infection, but I’m not sure how to use it. Like, should I eat it straight or mix it with something? I read online that curd has these probiotics that could maybe help boost my system or something. But also, I’m confused because I’ve heard mixed things! Do the benefits of curd really extend to treating throat issues? I’m just nervous that I’m making it worse or missing another remedy. If curd is good for throat infection, how often should I consume it? Would it be better than just sticking to warm soups or teas?

In the context of a throat infection, curd is sometimes recommended due to its probiotic properties, but its role in Ayurveda varies based on individual constitutions and the nature of the symptoms. Curd, or yogurt, has beneficial bacteria that can support gut health and potentially boost immunity. However, its effectiveness depends on the current state of your dosha balance and the qualities of the infection itself. Curd is generally cooling in nature, which might not be ideal if your throat infection has Kapha dominance, characterized by symptoms like excessive mucus, heaviness, and sluggishness. In cases of Kapha-related throat issues, consuming curd could potentially exacerbate congestion. On the other hand, if your throat problem leans towards a Pitta imbalance, reflected by burning sensations or swelling, curd might offer some soothing relief. For a more harmonious approach, you could consider taking buttermilk, which is easier to digest and doesn't aggravate Kapha as much. To prepare buttermilk, churn a few tablespoons of curd with thrice the amount of water and a pinch of rock salt, then consume it during lunch or as a midday drink. If you choose to incorporate curd directly, it could be beneficial to have it during lunchtime rather than late evening, to aid digestion. If the infection seems to be of Pitta origin with inflammation, combining curd with a pinch of turmeric might enhance its anti-inflammatory effects. Regarding soups and teas, they can indeed provide more immediate comfort. Warm herbal teas with ginger or cinnamon can be soothing and support temporary relief. Turmeric milk could also be beneficial due to its anti-inflammatory properties. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it's important to consult a medical professional, as some throat infections may require more directed treatment. Remember, in Ayurveda, personalization according to your prakriti (constitution) and vikriti (current state) is crucial, so observing how your body responds is key.
