Doctors' responses

Your symptoms—generalized itching predominantly at night, sudden appearance of rashes, swelling of the lips, and temporary relief within 2–3 hours after taking anti-allergic medication—strongly suggest a case of Urticaria, known in Ayurveda as Sheetapitta.

Sheetapitta is classified as a Rakta Pradoshaj Vyadhi (blood-borne disorder) and is primarily triggered by viruddha ahara-vihara—incompatible diet and lifestyle practices that disturb the balance of Doshas, especially Pitta and Vata.

To manage the condition holistically, the following Ayurvedic regimen may be initiated under the guidance of a qualified Vaidya:

Haridrakhand – 2 teaspoons twice daily with warm milk

Navkarshika Kashaya – 2 teaspoons with water after meals

Raktashodhak Vati – 2 tablets twice daily

Katu Taila (e.g., Nimbadi or Patoladi Taila) – for external application over the body; wash off after 30 minutes

Dietary Guidelines (Pathya): Encourage foods that are cooling, anti-inflammatory, and easy to digest:

Amla, gulkand, coriander-infused water, kokum sherbet, fresh grapes

Light meals such as moong dal, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, and rice khichdi

Coconut water daily

Optional: Neem or Giloy juice for additional detoxification

Avoid (Apathya): Spicy, oily, fermented, or fried foods

Incompatible food combinations (e.g., milk with salty foods, fruits with milk)

Curd at night, seafood with milk

Late-night sleep, overexertion, and emotional stress. If swelling extends to the throat or you experience difficulty breathing, seek emergency care immediately.

To identify underlying triggers, tests like Total IgE, CBC with eosinophil count, and Liver Function Tests may be helpful.

If symptoms become frequent or chronic, Shodhana therapies such as Virechana (therapeutic purgation) or Raktamokshana (bloodletting) may be considered for deeper detoxification. Please try to document the appearance of the rashes and lip swelling with photos whenever possible—this can help greatly in clinical assessment and treatment planning.

The symptoms you’re experiencing - itching, nighttime rashes, and lip swelling - may indicate an imbalance in your doshas, particularly Pitta and Vata. Ayurveda often relates skin issues to blood and immune system responses, while also considering environmental and internal factors. Since your issue tends to recur, it suggests the presence of an aggravating factor that needs addressing beyond short-term relief.

First, let’s talk about dietary adjustments. It’s advisable to avoid foods that aggravate Pitta like spicy, sour, or oily meals. Instead, prefer cooling, hydrating foods such as cucumber, coconut water, and fresh fruits like watermelon or pear. Drinking lukewarm water infused with 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds throughout the day can also help pacify Pitta, aiding in reducing inflammation and soothing your skin.

In terms of lifestyle, consider a routine that supports your body’s natural cycle. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can support overall balance. Moreover, practicing stress-reducing techniques such as yoga or meditation will aid in calming your nervous system, potentially diminishing Vata aggravation which can manifest as dryness or itchiness.

Topically, you can apply aloe vera gel or coconut oil to the affected areas before bedtime, both known for their soothing properties. For your lips, pure ghee application can support softening and healing.

If symptoms persist, consulting with a qualified Ayurvedic professional for a personalized treatment approach is wise. To err on the side of caution, have an allergen test conducted under allopathic guidance. While these recommendations are aligned with Ayurvedic wisdom, immediate medical evaluation may be crucial if reactions persist or worsen.
